I'd like to have my teeth cleaned at some point in the near future, but I'm not sure whether to do it in Seoul or in the States (I'll be home for a couple of weeks in July). On average, basic exams/cleanings run around $90-100 back home...I assume it's cheaper here, but I'm really not sure. I'm sure some of you have experience with this...would I save a good chunk of money by selecting a dentist in Seoul?
Thanks!

I went to the dentist last week. My dentist is a Korean-American and is in a very wealthy neighbourhood. His costs were:
check-up - 20,000 won
x-ray - 20,000 won
cleaning - 100,000 won
TOTAL: 140,000 won
Because of my health insurance, which you should have:
check-up - 5,000 won
x-ray - free
cleaning - 80,000 won
TOTAL: 85,000 won
You can get it cheaper than this, but I went to this guy because I wanted a fluent English speaker because I knew I was going to have to get some dental work done. |

use this as a general rule.
ANY WORK ANYWHERE, medically or dentally speaking will be significantly CHEAPER than in the US of A.
it's merely a matter of how small the fraction is.
wealthy Arabs who demand the best of medical care and PAY CASH don't fly to the US for their medical care.
They fly to Germany.
Where they are not covered by any insurance and it's all out of pocket cash.
Their costs are a third or less of what they'd d be in the US.
that said.. from what I have read the Korean dentists aren't as inexpensive as I might have thought.
In Venezuela (granted, I took advantage of the black market dollar exchange rate) I was paying less than a FIFTH of US dental costs.
I'm almost certain I will need a cavity (or probably a fucking root canal) done soon. I'm stalling until I get my NHIS (which should be any day now) |

thanks...i'll probably just do it somewhere in seoul.
another question, while i'm on the subject of costs: anyone know what it costs to get the hep a vaccination in seoul? and, more importantly, is it easy to obtain at most clinics, or would one need to "shop around" for a place that has the vaccine on hand? i've been here for a while, but i know precious little about the medical system, having only visited a clinic once for a sinus thing... |

I'll chime in again..
merely to suggest if you're going to get the Hep A vaccination, make sure you get the Hep B along with it. You will need a booster shot later, but it's well worth it.
and tell me how much it costs you, I paid for this out of pocket in the US of A and what i paid flat out INFURIATED me. |

This is where tutoring (legally of course) a child of a dentist comes in. They'll give you the moon if they like you. |

Last year, I was needing a cleaning and fillings, but couldn't find it or get it. I asked around in my hagwon, but no answers avail and I didn't have time to get out on foot and search on a weekday.
I think a tutorial on how to get it if not in Seoul would help. The prices look good, but you just have to be able to find it and communicate. It would take a very high command of Korean to find a dentist and have a conversation about your teeth.
I ended up getting my dental work done in Chiang Mai, Thailand after my hagwon contract was finished. I got a cleaning and 5 fillings for 5000 baht or about $175 USD. I just walked in and communication nor anything else was difficult; just good sincere service. |

anyone know what it costs to get the hep a vaccination in seoul?
I just got the 2nd Hep B shot at Seoul National Univ Hospital-with insurance it cost about 20,000 Won.
The International Healthcare Center in the main building is pretty easy to use, they walk you to whatever you need to go in the hospital. |
