That's cool. It just seems that six months of late pay (not to mention all the other BS) is more than "the first sign of a problem." However I do have to give you props for staying as long as you did. I definitely agree that doing "the midnight run" is not a good thing. To be honest I've never understood why people did it. Just tell the boss that you quit and go home. They cannot stop you at the airport. You have commited no crime. |

| Apparently you have not worked for any bleepholes. Some of these hagwon owners are aggressive and would not take kindly if to your quitting. That situation can get very messy especially when your living in an apartment they pay for and have keys to. |

When you quit you vacate the apartment on the same day. And find a place elsewhere. I've worked for a bleephole (I'll send you his name by PM). He wanted to fire me (because I wouldn't tolerate being paid late and with unexplained deductions to boot) He ended up selling (for 1.1 million won) my contract to one of his buddies. The new boss told me that he sold my contract instead of firing me because he (the old boss) was frightened of me. He thought that I would beat him up even though I never said or hinted at this. I'm a big guy 6'2" 200 lbs and have been involved in bodybuilding and judo for the past 14 years.
For those who are less physically imposing (or female) it might be a good idea to bring a friend along, or change the locks to the apartment prior to quitting. I seriously doubt though that the hakwon owner is going to attack you physically. Yes I heard a few stories, but most have turned out to be urban legends. The rest could not be proved.
Likely all the boss is going to do is yell at you(you in the figurative sense not you literally, Mr. Shawner88). If you can't take a little yelling, well maybe you should've stayed home |

But you said leave notice before you quit? Where are you supposed to live then, a yeogwan? That situation is not going to fly. And I have been attacked physically by an owner, in Geoje-do Wonderland 3 years ago, (before I joined a gym and went from 6'0 scrawny 67kg to a healthy 80 confident 80 kgs...so that probably wouldn't happen now, but still...).
Anyway, it's not worth it when you can just do a runner! |

And not be allowed back into Korea for the remainder of your visa...or never if the boss lodges a criminal complaint against you. "He stole x million won from me!" You won't be there to defend yourself. Immigration is getting wise to runners. The days when you could do a runner, go to Japan and come back are pretty much over. Sure some people slip through the cracks, but do you want to risk it? And Immigration is also getting wise to those who leave and wait out the visa. Those days are numbered. Bottom line, if you do a runner, you could be penalized and you are making it worse for the teacher who comes after you or the teachers who are still there.
As for the yeogwan, why not? It should only take a week or two at the most, before you have another job lined up. I came to Korea this year without a job. 1-2 weeks later I have one and will be starting this Wednesday. You should have been able to save at least that much money. And you could probably get most hakwons to pay those (yeogwan expenses) My hakwon is footing that bill as well as airfare. |
