Nicholas, were you an OB/GYN in your past life...how do you know so much about tampons and ovulation???

And then I read "The IUD can sometimes slip out of the uterus. Sometimes it comes all the way out. Sometimes it only comes out a little. This is more likely to happen to women who are younger and who have never had a baby. If the IUD slips out of place, pregnancy can happen. If it comes out only part of the way, it has to be removed."

Seriously my life is the spitting example of Murphy's law, it would slip out and I would become pregrnant. I don't think anyone wants to see a little nolegirl running around, including myself!!

I am sticking with the pills

Its pricey though, for the hormonal IDU it is between $350.00-$500.00Can. Still even BC at 8 bucks a pack at planned parenthood would be around $400.00 all together.

They used to be a lot cheaper, but now that they are getting more popular the price is going up. The copper IUD cost me 150 dollars CAD. The hormonal IUD is covered by most insurance companies though (but not provincial health care). The copper one is not because only hormonal BC is considered BC (according to GreenSheild anyway). I paid 40 dollars for three months of BC before this. So by the end of this year I will have spent the same amount on BC with the added bonus of not having to pay for another four years.

I have has nothing but problems for a year, bladder/kidney infections, yeast infections, suddenly I'm even allergic to lube. I'm thinking it might be time to go off the pills and maybe ditch the tampons although, I think that the cup would help some of these problems.

Like I said, I got a bladder infection every time I had sex. No fail. I had all sorts of tests done, and as soon as I took antibiotics for the bladder infection I got a yeast infection. At one point, I was on a BC (the Evra Patch) that gave me a yeast infection every month. I could actually pinpoint what day I was going to get one each month it was that cyclical. My physician tested me for diabetes, and I got a kidney scan/ultrasound. Anatomically, I'm a perfectly healthy young woman. So, in December I ditched BC and have had one yeast infection since. I still have to take an antibiotic after sex (I try to do this as infrequently as possible though because i'm allergic to the narrow spectrum antibiotic for bladder infections, so I have to use a broad spectrum antibiotic that is more likely to cause a yeast infection). My boyfriend and I abstained as much as possible (and used condoms when we both relapsed) until I got an IUD in February. It's been smooth sailing since. The BC Pill changes the balance (and so do antibiotics) of the mucus and natural bacteria along your vaginal wall. So it's no surprise that you are suddenly allergic to lube. Your problems won't get better, they will only get worse. I battled what you have been battling since I was 19, three years later I finally feel like myself again! I recommend getting off hormonal BC asap, changing to the cup or pads, wear 100 percent cotton underwear all the time (and yes it is possible to find sexy undies that are 100 percent cotton) and avoid tight clothing in the heat. I try to wear skirts as much as possible when it is hot out so there is more room to "breathe" down there. I intend on bringing about a dozen yeast infection kits to Korea with me and I've already had my doctor write up a prescription for a year's worth of low-dose preventative antibiotics.

There are also a lot of environmental reasons to stop taking the Pill. The synthetic hormones are getting into our water now and wildlife is having some serious problems regarding gender, etc.

Oh and the IUD is inserted in about two minutes by a gynecologist. It is not invasive surgery or anything of that sort. It comes in a very long tube-like applicator that the gyno inserts. He pulls the tube out when everything is in place and then has special scissors to cut the strings attached to the IUD so that they stick out at the opening of your cervix ( you should feel for them once a month after your period to check they are still in place).

I did ditch it this month, first time in 5 years, I have noticed a few changes already. I feel thinner, no infections, and I'm really...umm in the mood Wink (sadly my fiance is in Canada). This last year has been terrible, sometimes I wonder if you can be allergic to a guy...I have had 3 terrible bladder infections and at least 12 yeast infections (which I treat with yogurt and sesame oil...which smells HORRIBLE but takes away the pain) If I use lube even once...I will get an infection, that never happened until I got with my guy (Yes, we have both been tested for STDs...twice..and we don't have anything). I'm so sick of it!

I think that we will splurge on the IUD, I might go for the hormonal IUD because I have naturally heavy periods, and my in my family there has been a lot of uterine trouble--including anaemia caused by constant bleeding.

I'm also ordering a diva cup, I am going to get the starter kit, I really never thought about alternatives to pads/tampons, but after doing some research I think that I might give some of their products a try. I'm going to eliminate every chemical possible and see what happens.

something you also might want to consider (which myself and a friend of mine had to do also) is asking your boyfriend to get treated for a yeast infection. If you have one, or if you've just had one or are just starting to get one, you can pass it to your boyfriend where it will go unnoticed until you have sex. A couple days later you will notice you have another infection. My friend was having infections all the time, consistently. Both my doctor and hers recommended he get checked out. ESPECIALLY if he is not circumcised as it is easier for boys to carry bacteria when they are not circumcised. So, maybe you can look into that? But he does have to see a doctor about it because obviously, boys have different parts than girls and he would therefore be treated a little differently. I don't think he can use a cream, for example. I think He has to use the fluconozole pill which is prescription only (in canada). You two could just be passing the same infection back and forth without even realizing it!

From what I know... yes. Girls can be allergic, in a sense to some guys. All depends on what bacteria etc each is bringing to the table. Some just doesn't mix well with others.

Also rough sex/pressure on bladder can lead to bladder infections... I think it's due to bruising. you should try to pee before and after sex if this is an issue.

He is getting checked out hopefully today:), there is a chance that there is a yeast infection in his prostate, but it is almost impossible to test for. He has faired much worse than me...while he was here he had kidney stones, bladder infections and prostitous, which he was recently hospitalized for. We thought that we might be passing it back and forth, my best friend had that problem to, but I still have issues during our separations which have been upto 3 months at a time.

I also believe that my doctor back home was lazy, and instead of listening to me when I would tell her something was off she would brush it off, like for example I have pain in my right ovary during sex, she said oh that is normal a few days before your period...but it wasn't a few days before it was ALWAYS, and she just kept brushing me off. I will have to find a decent doctor when I get home...she was nice enough but I don't like being dismissed.

How would you get tested for a sex allergy? Confused

If you get constant bladder infections, a good natural cure is to drink cranberry juice. Even the sugary ones here work well. Ocean Spray is the best at 25% juice and it can be found in Seoul. I like to dilute the juice in some water because it also flushes the bladder and kidneys.

Also remember to wipe from front to back when peeing. I know it sounds simplistic, but some women pat, scrub, or wipe opposite after going to the bathroom, and bacteria can get in there.

I had a bladder infection for almost 6 years, and cranberry juice (suggested by a natural doctor) was the only thing that cleared it up. I tried all sorts of antibiotics, with only minimal relief. At least it's cheap and harmless to try it!!!

As for yeast infections, back home you could also use Boric Acid suppositories. you could get the pharmacist to fill the gel caps with the powder for you, or do it yourself. It's over the counter and really cheap. I had only minor success with this, but lots of people swear by it. I've also heard that wearing a pantyliner with plain yogurt smeared on it works well, shallow, lukewarm yogurt baths are good, and acidophilis pills taken orally are good.

If you really want to get rid of yeast infections for a long time, you would probably need to go on the Candida Diet. It can be pretty brutal as there is no sugar, alcohol, vinegars, etc. but it really kills the bad yeast in your body. When I went on it I also lost 25 pounds in 2 months, and didn't get sick with ANYTHING for a year. You usually only go on it for a few months, so it's temporary "pain". It's a lot of work, though, and would be pretty difficult to do over here. But even cutting down on sugar in your diet will help, especially white rice and white bread. It's just food for the yeast. If you are craving sugar, it's just the yeast talking. Try to starve them and you should see results.

For men who pass the yeast back to your body, you can get a cream in Canada, and probably here too, that treats thrush. This is the form that guys get. You can't always see it, either. Your partner should be using it if you have had sexual contact with him and you have a yeast infection. It can be very low grade and it can keep reinfecting you. Especially if he is not circumcised.

While not a doctor, I have had a lot of past personal experience with these problems. Don't let these things linger. Do what you have to do to improve your quality of life. Always keep trying things until you find something that works for you....

All of the solutions you suggested are great. Personally, I tried every trick in the book and I still get bladder infections from sex. I'm healthy, but my doctors' only explanation is that "its just a problem some women have." So I have to take an antibiotic if I feel I am at risk for getting one to ensure that I don't get one. I used to get them all the time when I was a kid too. So I do my best to stay hydrated (I stay away from caffeinated beverages) and listen to my body.

I did the candida diet for about a month. I felt awful at first, but then really great. Apparently you have to do it for three months in order to rid your body of all the bad yeast.

I took acidophillis pills did not work for me, I took them for a year with no changes. But I've been considering going back on them because I think it was my BC that affected my body. I really need to go on the candida diet again. I have two tsps of sugar in the morning and I LOVE chocolate, but those are the only two things I'd have to give up. I don't have caffeine, and I don't eat meat or dairy so I've had a pretty easy time with it. What is most difficult is the herbal remedy they give you to cleanse. It tastes bloody awful.

I'm curious... but I went to the Mirena website and it said, over and over again, that it was specifically for women who've already had a child. I didn't dig deep enough to find the why behind it, but it seemed pretty specific. If you haven't had a child, did you get this inserted in Korea?

I haven't had a child, and the NP in the UK recommended it to me, especially since I was going overseas for an undetermined amount of time. I also have had lots of negative reactions to different pills (crazy biatch style).
The Mirena has lightened my periods considerably, and moderated my PMS as well.

They told me to come in when I was on my period, as your cervix is softer and its easy to just slip it in.
DO make sure you go back after a week or so. They may need to trim the threads. Otherwise they can 'stab' your partner. I didn't have time to get them trimmed, so for a year I kept stabbing my husband! So embarrassing. Embarassed

You can get the Mirena here. I have heard of people getting it in Seoul. Not sure where though, as I have just avoided going to a gyno here.

Can we kind of veer off for a moment and talk about losing weight when going off birth control?

Scarlet, you said you feel thinner, but have you lost a lot of weight? I know it's different for every woman, but how many pounds would you say a woman gains on average when taking the pill, and how many pounds can be lost when going off of it?

Also, what's good are those cranberry pills (ursa avi?) and the cranberry herbal medical teas. I'm coming to Korea on August 2nd, and I can buy that stuff for you and you can reimburse me when I get there if you are interested?

Check this tea out:

And these pills:

...just to start out with. I'm a big believer in natural healing and that stuff has always worked when I had UTI's in the past.

I am still in Canada (I leave in July) so I ordered them myself. But thatnks for your offer! And also, thanks so much for the information. I'm all about prevention really. Because my yeast infections are always the result of taking a preventative antibiotic more then twice a week, if I can find a natural way to prevent bladder infections then I won't have to worry about yeast infections anymore!

I am also going to pick up some more acidophillis. Now that I am off hormonal BC I think it will work, finally.

Damn. I googled this and I think I'd rather have a yeast infection. Maybe I'll try it over summer when I will hopefully have more control of what I eat and when.
