waves her stick at the students like a baboon. sometimes spends more than ten minutes yelling at them and making them put their hands in the air- and then criticises me for not finishing the lesson and using time efficiently. threatened me with dismissal when I took one day off for an eye infection. has no graciousness, manners, or sense of humour at all. demands detailed lesson plans submitted to her in advance (to which she offers no feedback or contribution) and brand-new worksheets made up by me, even though all of the classes that she teaches by herself are completely centered on the godawful textbook and lots of chatter in korean.

just venting.

I'd tell her I'm her co-teacher, and that she has to submit lessons to me telling me what I'm to do in her class.

I prefer being the main teacher because it's less stressful and better for the students. But, if someone were riding me like that, I'd reverse the role quickly.

Yes there's that... I'm 25 and she's mid-30s. I have a couple other coteachers who are also 35 to 45 and I get along with them just fine.

Why? I haven't finished a whole year yet, but at this point I am so burnt out on teaching English in this society - and with this co-teacher in particular- that I wouldn't care if I were made to be used simply as a pronunciation driller for 10 minutes a class and let alone for the other 35.

Fighting! Where never was heard a disparaging word; Korea drilling!

IMO you gotta turn it around and make it your own, the situation. From that comes energy to, like Frank Sinatra, do it YOUR WAY (yes, just like Burger King serves it). Summon the inner ajumma/ajoshi and WHAMO, let that coteacher have it smack between the eye orbits, POW. Lookie here
coteach, I'm foreign beef! Your mission is code named 'alien beef'. Good luck.

My co-teacher falls asleep in the back of the classroom when I'm teaching.
I last my garde 2 classes today, because they where making fun of her while she was sleepying. Then she wakes up and leaves the classroom with me trying to restore order.

My co-teacher is scared shitless of me. When ever we get into a pissing contest, she thinks I make too much sense with common sense and logic. Laughing

For me, I just like doing it my way. But, if the co-teacher were giving me a hard time, I would remind her that I'm the assistant, and that she has to submit her lessons to me so that I know what I'm doing in her class.

I think you'll find that most KETs actually prefer it if you can run the show without them having to worry about much. I take it you're teaching elementary? Perhaps in that case there's little choice but to work more closely.

When I first started I had a couple of co-teachers who wanted me to prepare lesson plans so that they knew what would happen at every step. Now that's long since gone completely by the wayside. It's much the same for discipline. At some point you have to demonstrate you can handle this yourself for the students to take you seriously.

Yup. I've never been threatened with dismissal, but if that day actually came in Korea, I'd probably laugh and dare them to. That type of job isn't where you want to stay for more than 1 year anyways.

When you get a good school, you know it is a keeper.
