Hi all,

I'm planning to secure a job in a public school for a March 2009 beginning, then spend January and February traveling to Australia and Thailand. (I'm from the US.) Since I'm buying my flights now, I can get great prices, and am looking at a flight from Bangkok to Incheon for about $370 (my total cost for flying from the US through to Korea will be about $1900, including stops in Australia and Bangkok).

I understand that to get reimbursed, you need to show proof of purchase (receipt, boarding pass). I'm uncertain how this works when you're arriving from a different origin than your home country.

I have three questions:

1. Given my round-about route to Korea, how do I claim a flight reimbursement from my public school employer?
2. Can I still qualify for reimbursement, even though I'm not flying directly?
3. Is there a standard amount they will pay out regardless of the price of my ticket?

Anyone with any knowledge or experience of this sort of thing, you're help is greatly appreciated!

As long as you are up front with them, they will probably approve it. Public schools hire from Australia, NZ, UK, USA, Canada and S. Africa. With your more expensive ticket, they are likely to reimburse you for the cost of a one way ticket from your home country.


Have you had an E-2 visa before, or had one and have broken some laws in your past? If so, you will have to get your E-2 visa from your home country at the Korean Consulate office. Most people must go in person and have an interview. Research this and the new E-2 rules before you start paying for flights.

This will be my first time applying for an E2 visa, so I'll have to get the interview at the consulate here at home before embarking. From what I've read on Dave's, I gather that the contracts can be very accommodating if you're up front and clear when negotiating. Thanks for the feedback Bibbity!

I believe that you will be reimbursed for your flight TO KOREA. From wherever you are, in your case that would be Thailand to Korea. That's what happened to me, at least.

They're not going to pay for you to go sightseeing around the world, sorry.
