I told a friend my concern about meeting women here since I find many of them too uptight.

He told me I had nothing to worry about since girls will dig my broken korean. He totally did not listen to what I said -_-;

But that made me think...why would they like that?

Oh, sure, they'll clap and coo at your broken Korean. And pat you on the head. And you may, by using more convential means, parlay that initial reaction into something more. But no, they're idiots who want somebody speaking their language like a 1950s TV indian chief.

I used to speak Korean to everybody like I was going score a bunch of points for it. And you should've seen the beaming, sh*t-eating grin that spread over my smug face as I was showered with cries of "한국어 잘 하시네요". But I realized that broken Korean is interesting to Koreans for about 5 minutes, which is generously 4 minutes longer than it ought to be. Nowadays, I don't speak Korean unless the person's English skills are just atrocious. So, yes, I still pretty much speak Korean all day, just not right off the bat.

Re-reading that, I don't think I listened to what you said either.

Actual Answer: they don't like broken Korean because it's broken, they like it because it's Korean.

Yep, exactly. They like it because it is better than no Korean at all.

My experience: just because they dig broken Korean doesn't mean they'll want to sleep with you. There's a difference between that kind of interest and attraction.
But give it shot; you may prove me wrong.

Haha, I didn't mean that when I said "uptight". I like girls who are chill and relaxed and not spend half the time in front of a mirror...well, that's just my preference, reality might be a little different though.

Because many women don't care about the finished product so much as the intention that comes along with it. By speaking Korean, even crappy Korean, you're showing them you at least give a little bit of a shit about your time here, which they appreciate.

Oh, and it probably helps that their expectations of us are piss-poor to begin with, so ANY Korean (I've had people get excited that I can greet them in Korean) is already exceeding what they expect of you.

The prolific wangsman makes it his business to turn that minute interest into attraction. 4 minutes of attention is long enough to begin the initial stages of seduction, no matter what language you're using. Wink

...club, grab hair, drag, cave = LUBSTORY

...your friend wear tightie-jeans tucked into hightops untied with a sparkling scarf over a pink Tshirt, white vest combo whilst sporting a prada backpack per chance these days? Very Happy

...don't learn Korean - it is best to know not what they speak of...believe me Shocked

I speak excellent broken korean. Speaking it WELL is another matter altogether and one that I am not terribly proud of considering the amount of money Ive spent to take the time off to study it.

However, I would say that I get the same reactions of interest but it quickly fades. I agree with the poster who said they are interested but they arent necesserily desirous for bed time with you. I found that most of the Korean women who appreciate my broken Korean and thinking its cute usually end up sleeping with my better looking non korean speaking friends. When I started learning Korean I thought I was gonna clean the floor with all the women I thought Id be able to mop up. Actually Ive found I had better luck with women, and dated much more attractive ones, when I spoke NO Korean than now that speak some.

Personality (and by personality I mean how nice your clothes are and the amount of time you spend in the gym) are generally the more important traits looked for by (Korean) women.

Agreed. I think Korean women project a certain vibe toward western men, which is easily misinterpreted as romantic interest, but is really just a fleeting fancy.

This misinterpretation usually leads to some sort of language-exchange followed by more mutual confusion followed by some type of:

a.) friendship
b.) humping
c.) lawsuit
d.) all of the above
e.) none of the above

To answer the OPs original question, why K-women are so amused when we speak broken Korean, it's because we sound like children and children are cute and cute things are amusing.

From what my guy friends have told me, there's a little more to it. A couple have mentioned GF's displeasure when their Korean improved, and I wonder if, at least in those cases, there isn't a little bit of feeling superior on the part of the girl too.

Earth Chicks -- by no means all but a goodly number of them, including some amazingly well-balanced & intelligent ones -- find guys "cute" and "adorable" when we're struggling with, and making a hash of their (the chick's) language. Particularly here in Korea, might it be a rare glimpse at a cuddlier, less-threatening, more "vulnerable" side of a gender commonly seen as arrogant, demanding, authoritative, privileged, overbearing, menacing, and firmly in control?

Who here doesn't think that an accent or slightly broken English doesn't add a few points to the "hot or not" scale?

I for one like it, even though I have no idea why...

but eventually you will move from finding the accent hot to the language hot. and then you stop wanting to speak English at all. English is ugly, at least North American accents are.
