Hi,

If one pulls a runner, how likely is the school going to hire a lawyer and debt collector to pay back airfare?

Having said that, they can notify immigration that you left owing them money...this might make another visa very difficult.

The government gives the school money for your airfare. The school has no jurisdiction if you will, over your running.

I think the government alots around $50,000 for each native speaker that includes Salary, housing, airfare. This is what I've heard anyways.

Obviously there's some situations like I was in last year where my school housed me on campus and I'm sure, pocketed some of the money for themselves.

By the way, you sure you need to go home?

Are you intested in another job or set on leaving Dynamic Korea?

Why are you considering running? I want to hear your story.

thanks for the reply ronald. I work in a hagwon, not a public school. I just wanted to know if i pull a runner, can they call a collection agency in my home country and get them to make me pay the airfare back. The sketchy director has been taking money off our cheques "to pay the government", but we just found out he's been keeping it for himself. When i got here, i wasnt even placed in the apartment or area i was promised to be in. Instead they throw me in a moldy box with no air cond. It has a bed though...i'm ready to head back...i can't trust anyone here...

just break the contract, get a letter of release, and find a new job.

if he doesn't give you the release letter, threaten to report him... mention his siphoning off on your money.

Feel free to bring in a tape recorder to add as an intimidation factor. Maybe dress extra formal for that day as well.

He'll likely be shitting his pants.

If you think this is hot weather, just wait until later in the summer. Seriously.

Sounds like you better go. Good luck. Don't worry about a debt collector coming after you. Your boss won't do shit except hire another victim and stick him in the moldy box.

Dude, even if you went to Canada and you were from America, it would be hard for an American company to track you down. How the hell is a hagwon owner going to know the first thing about American collection agencies? If your boss has no business sense, don't give him more credit than that. Credit agencies only deal with American firms, and he would have to agree that they take part of the share. I know how you feel. In 2002, 90% of Korean teenagers said Korea is a corrupt society. Now, many Koreans are honest and good, but your chances of being screw*d as you just did is quite high, I am afraid.

There are other places in the world where you can teach English and run a much lower risk of being conned. Don't worry, son, just pack your stuff and go home. People do it all the time in your situation without any worries.

No, don't threaten him. Like Nike always says, just do it. He'll think twice next time, after he has a long and harrowing cry.

I'm all about the tape recorder idea. Do it, do it, do it. What's the worst he can do? Fire you? Hell beg you to stay with him in hopes you don't report him. Just do it, get a new job, new employer will situate the visa nonsense. Again, forget about this guy, leave him get a better job, work in a public school. Much nicer.

the second part i agree with entirely. the boss will do nothing whatsoever except find another...

You're right, what was I thinking? That must not have been sweat last summer.

Canada... Canada's not cold in the winter time either. Antarctica, now that's cold.

They cannot call a collection agency in your home country - no jurisdiction.
They won't chase you (beyond perhaps a nasty e-mail or 2). Too expensive and not practical.
They MAY file a complaint with immigration that could delay or prevent you from obtaining employment in Korea in the future.
