Does anyone teaching in Korea have experience with either leaving a spouse or a significant other behind in their home country?
I'm heading over next week, and leaving my better half here to fend for himself for the year.... we're both pretty laid back and easy-going, but have no illusions that's it's going to be rough at times. He's coming over for Thanksgiving/Christmas, so we'll roughly be apart 5 months at a time....
Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Or stories? I'm interested to see how people have fared with this.... We did agree that if I happen to run into Edward Norton while away, all rules are out the window.... HAHA. |

....and who is his 'rule out the window' chick? I think it's cool that you're doing it....although I have several friends that have done the same thing & none of them are still with the dude that they left behind.... Best of luck to you though, I don't think it's not doable, just didn't work out for them. |

I had a long-distance relationship with a Dutch guy for over three years. He didn't earn enough to get me a visa in the Netherlands, and I didn't have a stable enough job to bring him over here (plus he didn't want to live in the U.S.) so we just saw each other every summer and Christmas. It was doable, but very rough. We decided that it would be best to end it after all those years. BUT, it is doable as long as both understand what the plan is. |

Well, I can't really "break up" with him, I married him, lol. And yes, Edward Norton, I absolutely think he rocks. Only I get a "one", he doesn't. LOL.
Yea, we have a plan, I really need to be "independent" and he gets it, all that lame and mushy stuff.... I think all that's needed is a basis of communication and the ability to not get angry every 5 minutes. I had this all planned beforehand and he knew about it and thinks it's a really good thing for me to be doing, so he's 100% supportive, which I think helps a lot.
Thanks for the advice though, keep it coming if you've got it!
Does Edward Norton frequently travel to South Korea? Seriously, he's my favorite actor, not because he's hot (which he is) but because he's so SMART! Ok, enough babbling on that, lol. |

Are you from Ohio? Just curious. One of my best friends was here without his wife. It was rough on him, but they are still married.
Frankly, if I were really in love with someone and we've spent a long time together, I would notice other women, but I would really only have eyes for her. A night of pleasure is not worth ignoring all the great moments together. |

i'm not married, and i don't know how long you've been with your husband, but my boyfriend and i have been together for going on three years now. We spent one of those years as far apart from one another as possible without leaving the country. He graduated a year before I did and subsequently moved to British Columbia, and I stayed behind in Nova Scotia to finish my degree. It as rough, and we say each other only twice in that time. We almost broke up a bunch of times, but if you know your relationship is worthwhile, you'll get through anything . |

I did the same thing, we were apart almost four months at a time, and I am currently on my own again. It is totally manageable, it was a good thing for our relationship. Yes at times it is tough but it really made us a much stronger couple than we would have been having never gone through this experience. We even got engaged a few months ago. Once you get through the first separation, the second one will seem much shorter. If you can trust each other, and are willing to put in the effort to maintain your relationship there is no reason why it won't survive.
Good luck:) |

I did it 5 years ago. I wasn't happily married, I was married to my high school sweetheart. I left to come here for a year knowing he'd come visit after 6 months. We didn't even have sex the night I left, that's how unhappily married we were. I cheated on him after 4months, mainly because he didn't pay the bills and the phone and internet were cut off. I had no contact with him and felt VERY neglected. At the 6mth mark, I knew I wanted a divorce. I told him as soon as he finished his visit.
Now, 5 years later, I'm happily re-married and a first time mom. My husband is the most amazing man I've ever met. I'm so glad I took the chance to come over here, I found happiness. If you already are happy, hopefully you will stay happy. I wasn't but I found it here. I do think communication is key. If my ex had maintained good contact, e-mail, phone
calls, letters, etc., maybe I would have stayed unhappily married.
Good luck to you! |

Kumara Kitty that is the sweetest story ever. Congrats on the baby!!!
Seriously, that is so great, I am getting teary eyed.
To the OP if you are leaving him behind that should be the conclusion right there that it probably is not meant to be. Let yourself be open and avialable to meet new people. You never know what the future holds.
The people posting below seem to have been through the same trials and tribulations and have know found true, honest happiness in their sole mate and it really is touching. Best of luck
BTW, if I ever spot Edward Norton anywhre I will PM you immediatly with the location. I except the same from you if you see Vince Vaugn, he's mine!!! |

A friend of mine graduated from Ohio. One of my pretty good friends is from Ohio, and she's in Florida and can't wait to return back to Ohio.
I may or may not live there myself. You will miss Ohio after spending a while in Korea. It gets very humid in Korea, too, and there are tons of mosquitos waiting to get at some blood:) |

You'll be greeted by the cicadas (called mamies in Korea) when you come. That is about the time they show up . |
