Yikes, it's now Friday the 13th. Lucky to be alive I guess. What's the scariest thing that ever happened to you in Korea?

For me it was almost getting wiped on on my motorbike one night. It was dark, foggy, drizzling and the narrow highway Cheonan to Seoul, number 1 secondary. I didn't shoulder check and my helmet visor was fogged/wetted up anyway but I almost got creamed by a truck hauling a huge, live tree lying flat on the back with the tip hanging way out, branches all over the place. Three years ago. Only scary in hindsight. At the time it was nothing.

Yeah the net is super slow. Thought it might just be a side effect of the scotch. Glad it's not just me.

Well, the internet is fucking ridiculously slow tonight. Not scary, but fucking annoying. I'm trying to find out some stuff that's important to me and, in the time it takes for a page to load, I can take a shit, got out for a pizza and get another soju from the fridge.

What's up with it tonight?

Slow would describe my older elementary students that demanded scary stories for Friday the 13th. I took my lunch hour to find some stories on the internet (Bloody Mary and The Hook). "Teacher, we don't get it." Laughing

I'm not proud of this story, but.....
I was having one of those bad Korea days. Maxxed-out staring, bumping, and mocking, so I thought I'd de-stress with a few beers and a few friends.

Got out of the taxi, and waited at a red light to cross the street. As I waited, I overheard some short pudgy Korean 20something asswipe mama-boy make fun of me with his buddies.
Translated, he basically called me 'big nosed ape', and suggested that me, like all foreigners, would be better off under the wheels of a bus. He said they ought to throw a banana into the street to see if i followed it.

Overhearing this, I turned around to face him. I snapped. I put both of my hands around his neck, and squeezed it hard, briefly, before throwing him towards the street. I offered him a few choice words and noticed the cross signal had lit.

I walked across the street, and around a corner when he suddenly appeared right in front of me again. He was shouting... almost foaming at the mouth. Then I noticed 5 other guys posturing behind him. I'm not much of a fighter, so I sensed things were headed towards a very painful ending.
Some other guys came up to them and bowed deeply while saying something.
That seemed quite weird to me .
Then, Pudgy attempted to head butt me in the nose (while he was wearing glasses), and missed. I took off running. I didn't like the odds.
The streets were still wet from a shower, and I remember barely having enough grip to scramble left and right down random sidestreets.

Pudgy and his friends trailed. They were all wearing dress shoes, sweaters and slacks, so they were losing ground. Pudgy even fell flat on his face and skidded across the wet pavement as he rounded one of the corners.

When I saw him fall, i turned down another side street, into a 3-story building and ran up the stairs to a live music club.

I hurried over to the bartender, and told her to call the police. She just looked at me with this blank look that said, "Uh?".
For a split second, I contemplated picking up the knife she had on the counter.
I glanced back around and noticed pudgy and friends at the door of the bar.
The entire bar staff gave them one of the deepest, most respectful bows I have ever seen...in unison.

Why? They were gangsters.
Who woulda thought? They looked like the cast of Leave it to Beaver. Pudgy was Larry Mondello..

The entire bar went silent as they spread out and surrounded me. I literally thought my life was over.
I faked left, faked right, then all the fists started flying. Everything went black. Strangely enough I couldn't feel a thing... besides a rapid pounding heartbeat.
I was just trying to land a few of my own hits, eventually falling over a small partition while a huge vase crashed to the ground. Then I felt the kicks.

Then, it was over as fast as it started. I must have blacked out briefly because by the time I realized i was still alive, they were all gone. Vanished.

The bar was now dead quiet. Everyone was staring at me, jaws wide open. I looked around for my side-bag and noticed the broken vase, and the knocked over partition. Shit everywhere.
I found my bag, and began to feel the pain. Ribs, legs, arms, neck. I could barely move. Thankfully my big nose was still attached and not pouring blood.
I began to look under nearby tables for my cellphone, when one of the customers there sheepishly handed it to me.

I said thanks, stepped over the debris, and left the mess behind to join my friends as planned.

The real pain didn't set in until the next day.

I was followed home by some random drunk Korean guy that 'loved America" and kept holding my hand or putting his hand on the upper part of my leg... not the most comfortable thing in the world, but trying to get away from that so i could get to my girlfriend that was waiting in my apartment... not so fun...

I was walking, not paying attention to what was around me, and I noticed a dog standing right beside me. I yelled and jumped, and I was sure it was going to bite me for scaring it. But it didn't. The end.
