I have been invited to go to Seokcho next weekend. I've never been there, nor do I know what there is (other than the beach) to see in the general area.

To anyone who has been:

Would a one day trip by car be too short to make the trip out there?

what do you think?

You can get there via car in about 3 hours depending on traffic. That's on the expressway. Motorcycling takes about 4 hours on the non-expressways if you do it straight through.

The beach is the main attraction, but it is right next to one of Korea's most beautiful and popular National Parks and mountains, Seoraksan. I love the mountains in that area. If you go about 50km North of Sokcho, you can go to the Unification Observatory and stare into the Northern abyss.

You'll want several hours to explore Seoraksan, another couple for meals and exploring the city, plus whatever time you want to spend on the beach. The Unification Observatory is worth a visit, and some of the coastline villages nearby are cool to walk around in and check out New-England-like lighthouses, people mending nets, and squid drying on the razorwire.

Better if you could plan an overnighter. Do the beach the latter half of the first day & the mountain in the daytime the next.

I suppose you could jam both into a daytrip but 3 hours each way on the highway (assuming youre coming from Seoul) would definitely taint the experience.

A good time is contingent on fair weather too -- check the forecast.

By the way, its not Seokcho -- its Sokcho. Two long o's: soak-cho.
