|
|
I don't have an MA so I don't think I can go for a Uni job (?), but a friend of mine who has been living in Korea mentioned there are private language academies near all the big Universities where the students go for extra classes.
This type of work appeals to me more than working with kids, especially if it involves more in-depth projects like essay writing and critical reading that you can build on from week to week.
I have not seen these jobs advertised on this website, do these places have a particular name I can search for them by? Has anyone worked at them or have an opinion about what they're like, i.e job conditions, housing, etc.
Also, what's the deal with SAT prep? Are there special schools for this, and is this work seasonal (if so, when does the season start and end?)?
Thanks! |

Most of them (cram hagwons) can't legally hire a foreigner (unless you have the vaulted "F" visa.
Same for SAT prep.
As a regular whitey (and still abroad) you are pretty much limited to foreign language academies or public schools.
Kiddie schools outnumber the rest by an order of magnitude so the odds of finding a kiddie school (PS or hakwon) are 10x better than finding one with big kids or adults.
IF you insist on adults you are pretty much assured of working nasty split shifts (you teach when they are NOT at work - so early mornings and late evenings).
Time for you to head for the FAQ forum my friend. See you back here in about a week or so after you get done with your homework.

cool, thanks man, yeah I overlooked the FAQ on this one. Here's a
question though: what is it exactly about some Uni hagwons (and SAT
prep) that makes it illegal for them to hire a foreigner? No one
mentions this in the FAQ thread...
also, most of the uni hagwon posts in the FAQ are four or five years
old already... if anyone here is working at a Uni hagwon at the moment, could you spare five minutes to say how you find it generally, how much you get paid and if it includes housing?
looks like these jobs are all split shifts, I wouldn't mind that so much because I think I'd be more likely to actually follow through on doing other stuff (tae kwon do, music, writing, etc) once I'm forced out of bed in the morning.
thanks |

The ability to hire a foreigner is dependent on the licensing of the hakwon.
E2s are limited to: licensed foreign language institutes, public schools and college/universities.
Other teaching positions require an E7 and that will require a Masters OR professional licensing in your home country AND experience.
If you are looking for a uni position you will need at least a masters or PhD OR be in the country and have connections. As a newbie without a graduate/post graduate degree AND being abroad you have about 0% chance of landing a university job.
