So some Canadian guy was like, "No foods in the U.S. are authentic." So I said something like, "The U.S. has a much greater culinary tradition than Canada." He rolled his eyes and started telling me how many styles of Clam chowder there were in Canada.

Admittedly, I've never been, but I think the guy was uneducated and simply didn't like the fact that some American guy was bragging about the U.S.

I can't say many good things about my home country, but the art scene in the U.S. blows away pretty much every other country. The U.S. is probably the most diverse country in the world on so many levels. What the hell does Canada have to offer the world? Jack Squat! That's what I say!

diverse, yes. however anything uniquely USA was tidily destroyed by colonizing forces.

anything that is incredible about US food - and don't get me wrong, much of it has developed into a delicious mix - is from other places. same with canada.

delicious, yes. special? no. eat it and shut up about how awesome it is, because nobody cares.

They churn out some pretty decent hockey players, but other than that it's pretty much useless. Wink Also, their national anthem is undeniably much better than America's. However, BLAME CANADA, BLAME CANADA! lol

Also, define 'authentic'? America has food that I consider fusion. It has roots in its mother country but really is more 'American' than anything else. You don't find Chicago style pizza in Italy.

The seal hunt is a HIGHLY controversial issue in Canada and I wouldn't recommend making jokes about it when there are Canadians around. Harbour seals are hunted for their fur and their penises. They are skinned on the spot and their meat is left on the ice to rot. Many, MANY, Canadians are opposed to it and there are lots of organizations dedicated to stopping it. It is a huge political issue here. It was made illegal for seals under a certain age to be hunted (so no, those baby seals are not being deliciously enjoyed), but there is still massive lobbying about the hunts.

is that funny? Not all Canadians participate in hunting them and they certainly aren't eaten. Read up on things like this before you think it is okay to make jokes.

OK my joke wasn't a joke. Seal tastes good. Long long time ago I had some. Half the controversy is over killing something cute, sort of like some despise the eating of dogs. Yes, torture involved. Dude, I know all that crap. Give up the PC crap OK? If baby seals looked like squid who would care? Don't moralize with me. We're all guilty of something, and a dumb joke is just a dumb joke, pretty harmless generally. I can laugh at terribly racist jokes and not truly have those beliefs, y'know.

Who cares? Canadians, like so many Koreans, have little nation syndrome. An American hangs a big-ass US flag on the wall of his "ah-pah-tuh" and he's a nationalistic, redneck douchebag. A Canadian does the same thing and he's just exhibiting national pride. Guys with big dicks don't go around telling everyone they've got a big dick.
