Actually the guy is better off NOT filing a report.
Several years ago a guy called Aussie John was attacked and suffered a nasty injury to his eye, that required a lot of medical attention and hence a lot of expense.
At the hospital he made the mistake of saying he got attacked, hence the eye damage, because of this, his medical costs were no longer covered by the National Insurance scheme and he had to pay for everything himself.
If he had said that he had fallen down the stairs he would have received medical attention for free or at least subsidized.
Moral of the story, if you get stabbed, just say you fell on a knife, or broken bottle. |

Only problem with this is that YOU would then be the one charged. There is NO self-defense law in Korea. The more injured party is considered the victim.
Beat them to a pulp and leave them laying in their own blood instead. |

I cannot get out of this septic tank of a country soon enough.
Edited:
I should point out that I've met Matt (I'm also one of the Korea Herald writers) and I think he's a very nice guy. He's also experienced and intelligent enough to make an informed decision about whether to go to the police. He's in a better position than most of us to know what the likely outcome would be. I hated starting my day with this news, and I'm glad he's (relatively) all right. It could have been so much worse.
It takes a lot to make me feel unsafe. I'm not one of those cringing pussies who is scared to go out after dark and who jumps at every shadow. But the longer I'm here, the less welcome I feel. Ten more days.

Korean Herald? Not surprising. I haven't read the actual
paper in some time but their online site is a little too leftest
for my tastes.

Korean Herald left wing? You're joking. It was like a brochure for the Grand National Party during the last election, saying how great Lee Myung Bak is, and it's content is laregly driven by advertising dollars.
You must be somewhere to the right of Adolf Hitler to consider the Korean Herald left wing.
And yes, the attack sounds bad, I hope the two who were attacked are OK. |

I hope Matt makes a full and speedy recovery. I can perfectly understand his reasons for not filing a report though I believe I would have filed one myself under the same situation, as much as anything just for a record of the event in the case the attackers strike again.
I'd advise ex-pats to use extra caution when heading out at night or going to places which have experienced troubles before. I think with the current political climate, some of the lunatic fringe are seeing foreigners as easy scapegoats for their misguided pride and frustrations, be careful out there. |

Just to note, the attack happened on a Saturday afternoon. |

Thank you for bringing that up. I was thinking the same thing. |

Which makes it all the more scary, having occurred in a public park in broad daylight. Unfortunately, I feel some locals are getting more brazen and I see a trend developing where more ex-pats are experiencing physical confrontations and/or attacks through no fault of their own.

Was it just a random attack? Or was it directed anger over something written?
Probably the former, I'd imagine... any more details about the incident? |

Matt Lamers, the editor of The Korea Herald's "Expat Living" section, has been stabbed!
He is known on Dave's ESL Cafe by the username "KHerald."
Matt and another editor were viciously attacked by two Korean men at a park near Hongdae!
See the links below to learn more about this attack:
Gypsy Scholar: "Expat Still Living"
http://gypsyscholarship.blogspot.com/2008/06/expat-still-living.html
The Marmot's Hole: "Get Well Soon, Matt"

Lamers did not contact the police about the attack. Given his experience of writing stories about police not taking crimes against foreigners seriously, he decided not to contact the police about this attack, as he believes that filing a police report will not do any good.
If it had happened to me I would of contacted the police. I always recommend filing a police report. Even if the police do not take it seriously, at least there will be a record of the crime. Who knows, maybe the attacker is a serial attacker preying on foreigners. And if everyone who gets attacked by this guy files a police report, eventually a pattern will show, which might get the presses attention, which would lead to stories being done about this serial attacker preying on foreigners, and people would then be on the look out for him, and there would be pressure on the cops to catch him, and thus it would be more likely that they catch the evil doer. But none of that would happen if nobody filed a police report.
Never underestimate the importance of filing a police report. Always do it.
Matt (aka KHerald): Sorry to hear about what happened to you. I'm glad that the injury was not that serious (it could have been much worse). Hope you get better soon.

Sorry to hear this but in a country of millions this is almost childish. Yes, unfortunately, childish in the fact that in one of the US' larger cities this would not have made the local news. I believe expats are much safer here than in a country where school shootings, rapes, armed roberries, etc. are the norm.. |

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid some people here are.
"Oh you should file a report".
This is not Canada, this is not the USA, this is NOT a country with a civilized legal system.
The LAST thing you want is to get involved with the police and/or courts in Korea in anyway.
Case in point, guy takes his Korean wife to court for having an affair. He has video taped evidence. What happens, HE gets fined for taping her!
Remember, SHE was on trial NOT him. For him to be fined in a civilized legal system would require a seperate trial.
Repeat after me, "This is Korea, This is Korea".
Once you get yourself involved with the Police/Courts you are opening a can of worms over which you have NO CONTROL, ESPECIALLY in Korea.
I know of a guy here who was tried by the courts (minor matter). He was not told of the trial (had no summons issued), had no opportunity to lodge a defense. He was tried in abstentia!!!
John Graykan of Lone Star a rich and powerful man was held hostage for 2 weeks by the Korean government. There were NO charges against him, yet he was forced to saty in Korea, and you think a teacher with no money or influence is going to get better treatment?
Dream on. |

The attacker was no doubt a literary critic of some sort. |

I lived in America for 25 years and was never once murdered, raped, kidnapped, or in any way molested. What's your point?
