|
|
So I have completed almost 60 units at a local JC in northern california and have been debating finishing up to get my BA with an online degree. I am working two jobs to support myself and my younger sister so it is a struggle to attend classes at a traditional college. I eventually plan on moving out to Korea to teach english for a few years. Does Korea frown upon online degrees or does it not matter as long as it is accredited??
some examples: university of phoenix, columbia college, etc
Some feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanks |

Online versus onsite is not the issue simply as long as the degree is through an accredited institution. Many will tell you different places in the world frown or look down at people who complete their BA or MA or PhD online, but that simply isn't a valid argument. We live in a very rapidly changing world, and one of the few things in education that has improved is the introduction of online educational opportunities for those who like you do not have the time to enroll in a costly onsite degree program.
There are good programs out there Phoenix, AIU, and others can provide you with a very high quality education. You have to decide which program is right for you then go for it. People complaining about the viability of online instruction have either never taken an online degree program or have limited experience, i.e. they took only one or two classes and are basing their opinion on their limited involvement.
People who have taken either their BA or MA online can tell you the quality of instruction is very high and the interaction is dependent on the individual's willingness to interact in an online environment. I just wanted to get this out before all of the online education bashers took their jabs in a subject area they are opinionated about, but have little experience with. |

Are you making a ton of money at your jobs, and not interested in giving them up, or are you working two jobs in order to make ends meet?
The online vs. traditional university question is important, but considering the weight you have placed on your financial situation, it sounds like you might be more interested in pursing the most cost effective way to get your BA.
University of Phoenix and other online schools might be a lot more expensive than in-state tuition for state schools in your area, and working while attending school would make a much bigger dent in the amount of loans you have to pay back after graduation, if you go to the school that will give you the best deal.
If I were in your shoes, I would head down to the nearest state university and talk to a financial aid counselor at the university, regarding your situation. Find out how much you will qualify for in financial aid and whether the cost of living portion will enable you to cover rent, food, and other expenses while you attend the state university full time. It might be possible through taking out loans, grants, and scholarships; to give up one or both of your jobs while attending school full time. A good financial aid counselor will be able to tell you how much money you'll get to cover rent, living expenses, tuition, etc., help you decide if you'll be able to make ends meet, and if giving up one or both jobs will result in more financial aid since you'll be earning less per year.
Of course if money isn't the issue, then an online degree would probably work out pretty well. |

definitely to make ends meet. I guess I am just so used to people talking down on online degrees.. I was starting to get skeptical myself. |

I've heard horror stories about the University of Phoenix. There's some websites out there devoted to how crappy their online programmes are (it looks like they've been taken down). I don't know if that makes a difference to Korean immigration, but you might want to find something better for life after Korea. |
