It was the Sri Lankan envoy who raised concerns over the British monarchy.

The monarchy costs each adult in Britain around 62p a year but even groups representing taxpayers said there was no case for getting rid of it.
Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "With so many human rights abuses around the world the UN should be busy reporting on issues of starvation, execution and the denial of the vote to huge numbers of people around the world.
"Saudi Arabia and Cuba should pay a little more attention to their own human rights record."
The UN report was also critical of the UK's treatment of immigrants from Sudan.
Syrian representatives accused the UK of discriminating against Muslims and Iran complained about the UK's record on tackling sexual discrimination.
A royal source said: "People here certainly haven't detected any appetite for a referendum. The Queen is a focus for national unity, identity and pride."

| I find it rather curious that so many progressives(a category in which I'd include UN Human Rights bureaucrats) think that abolishing the monarchy is some sort of great goal to pursue. Some of the countries most lauded by progressives, and here I'm thinking mostly of the northern European social democracies, are long-standing monarchies, with no apparent plans to abolish. Meanwhile, the country that progressives and anti-imperialists love to hate(sounds like "You, I say!") practically invented modern republicanism. |

They really make the Human Rights Council at best look like a sham played on the world and at worst a hypocrite of monumental proportions.
I must say, reading more about how the UN is falling into this foolishness (which is so far from its original purpose) makes me think we should just close it down.
Having the current Human Rights Council members is like having a child molester watch your child. Its not only stupid its down right insulting to the entire notion of human rights and freedom from oppression.
Whats next, Hezbelloh, Hamas, AQ get to create the anti terrorist positions of the UN? |

Scrapping the entire UN is such a waste. Instead, the US has decided recently to abandon the Human Rights Council. Since it only had observer status anyway, this was a measured move.

No it isn't. Its a hell hole for nepotism and inaction. Its grown too large and wastes too much money and time. Its by and large ignored unless they wave a big gun and even then it fails at utilising it properly.
If I was nice I would say it should be revamped, but really all countries need to sit down and negotiate whether it should exist. Just as the league of nations was closed down and later replaced by the UN, we should close down the UN and create a new organisation.
One that has teeth for action when needed, one that has set identifiable policy of human rights, standards etc and a set process. One in which the permanent security council either doesn't exist or only exists as an over sight for the new programs military unit.
Also they should limit all workers to 5 years in the organisation and choose them only from countries that follow a set of prinicples upheld by the organisation and have been found to be honest.
Corruption and excess should be dealt with harshly and every countries leaders should realise that if they go off the deep end and act like mugabe or carry out attrocities like rwanda then they will end up sitting in a jail cell before the end of the year or dead.
Its not exactly nice, but the UN tries to be too nice and doesn't even help anyone. Well they help someone but it sems more like a job creation scheme rather than like a resolution. Dafur, Palestinian, Iraqi, Afghan refugee camps, etc seem to go on for ever and there never seems to be an end to them. |

It's ironic that the symbol of "democracy" in the Anglo countries is an unelected, in-bred millionaire who wouldn't have her job if it's wasn't for some genetic lottery.
The Monarchy, however, should stay, if only because England needs the tourist dollars and the press needs something to sell papers (kinda like Britney Spears).
That anyone could take the Royals seriously these days is just beyond the pale... |

Why is that ironic?
Half the middle east has the same issue and yet we dont hear the UN making statements like The saudi family should take a break.
Therefore what point is the UN making? |
