Um, because the CRC has to come from your home country? |

What difference does that make when the question is what is a good website for a CRC? Just wondering if you know of a site that is good for a Canadian check or an American check for that matter. |

Because the answer would be different depending on whether the person needed an American CRC or a Canadian CRC.
Also, as far as I know, Immi is still only accepting CRCs issued by government authorities. So, unless your federal, state, or local government has an online background check system (some US states do), an online check will be of no use to you. |

Good advice...don't ignore that iksanboy.
Immigration still doesn't really understand what an apostille is yet either...they don't understand that you can't notarize something other than a legal document...thus you can't receive an apostille to something that isn't a legal document.
On-line background checks are not legal documents.
Another useful tip...make sure the CHRC looks as "legitimate" as possible. Some states may issue a simple database form that appears as though it was obtained through an online agency...Korean Immigration will deny it...even though it has a legal notarization and apostille affixed.
Korean's prefer official appearances more than official content.
Don't do the online checks...go through a state government agency...start with your local police and work your way up the line.
Good luck. |

Not exactly right, but close enough.
Notarization is a way of authenticating the signature on a document. Legally, it says, "A trusted official (i.e., the notary) certifies the identity of the signer of this document."
Thus, a document without a signature cannot be notarized. And without notarization, it cannot be apostilled.
Notarization for background checks generally takes one of two forms:- A police official signs a "clearance letter" stating that no criminal record was found, and the database printout is attached to this letter. The police official's signature is then notarized.
- Someone (you, an attorney, etc.) writes an affidavit stating that "The person concerned has no criminal record, as proven by the attached printout." The affidavit is signed before the notary, who notarizes the signature.
Nota bene that Korean Immigration is far more likely to accept the first form.

More to the point, they don't bear any signature, so they can't be notarized. In order to get them notarized, you have to make out an affidavit. This will work for applicants in Korea who do the affidavit and get it notarized at the Embassy, but even then you're better off with a government-issued check.

I can attest to this from personal experience.
My first CBC came from the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts, where I was directed by my local police department. They provided only a simple printout from their database. I asked them to provide a signed, notarized version; they indicated they could not do so. I made out an affidavit regarding the CBC and had it all notarized and apostilled, but Immigration rejected it.
The second time around, I went to the Kentucky State Police, who provided a signed, notarized clearance letter with the database report attached. This one was much more official-looking, printed on security paper with the State Police letterhead. Got it apostilled, and Korean Immigration accepted it without a second glance.

Good advice. IF you're already in Korea AND your STATE offers an online option, go for it; otherwise, listen to the man. Don't waste your money on an online check by a private company, because odds are Immi won't take it. |

But kuno808.....you're still using a state government agency...not an independent private company. |
