| I just saw the movie, "The World's Greatest Indian" and wondered if there are any teachers from Invercargill, NZ? Anthony Hopkins' character is from that area. |

I grew up in another part of the South Island, however I did spend some time living in Invercargill.
What did you think of the movie? He did a pretty good job of the accent - especially the rolling R's - which is typical of them thar southern folk. |

Yep, am from Invercargill.
What did you think of the movie? It glossed over details like the fact that he had a wife and four children, which offended some at home.
Recognised lots of places and some faces. The guy playing the mayor is the actual current mayor. But he's an import from 'up north' and no stranger to self promotion, so I wasn't too surprised to see him on screen. |

| I actually went to the guy's family hardware shop in Invercargill last year and saw a bunch of his original world's fastest Indians. He really modded the ever living crap out of those things! |

Ha ha , classic.
Been reading Dave's for ages but couldn't resist replying to this one. I'm from Invercargill and have the remnants of the southern brrrr. Four years at University hanging around Aucklanders cured that one.
Also Korean middle schoolers couldn't tell what the crap I was on about for my first couple of weeks so have cultivated a pretty nice mixture of American and BBC English accent for in the classroom.
Hopkins pretty much nailed the accent but you could expect that from an experienced, legendary actor. Pretty good movie, don't know if I'd have given it a second look if it hadn't been set in my home town. |

Yeah, I've watched it twice, and own it on Blu-ray. It's a keeper. I will watch it again just so the wife can see the transgender.
One question... do old people from Invercargill get as much action as Hopkins did?
I also got a kick out of hearing, "Bob's your uncle" again. Its been a few years to hear that one...
The American Indian part was cute (and probably necessary). I felt they added that character to appease any complainers about the title. |

Thought I would bump this thread.
Anyone from Invers? Anyone seen this film?
I had a short relationship with one of the extras. Also I went to the school where one of the scenes was filmed.
Additionally, if you haven't seen the film, you could do a lot worse on a rainy Sunday afternoon. |

LOL when the Rolling Stones visited Invercargill in the early 60s, Mick Jagger famously proclaimed Invercargill as "the asshole of the world".
Times have changed- I think it's a pleasant place with nice people; a good provincial feeling. |

Wow! I didn't realise how many Southern Men were in Korea. I thought I was on my lonesome.
I'm from over the border (West Otago), but I spent 2 very long years in Winton. I caught just about every trout in the Otapiri and Oreti, and ended up finding a wonderful girl who was teaching at James Hargest. Man, it can rain down there.
I have some pretty dim memories of Invercargill: rain - rain- rain- rain- and more bloody rain. Also, getting my Norton push started up some of the world's widest streets - and having to hide from the local bikies (Antartic Angels). All good fun when I think about it now.
What's all this about a movie???? |
