So I've got an interview and teaching demonstration on Thursday.

I got an email that says the theme of my teaching demonstration will be: "Teaching English as a foreign language in Korea. Prepare 10 minutes class. (Available to use computer in the classroom)"

I sent them this reply:
Quote:
I have one question, regarding the theme of the teaching demonstration: You said it was "Teaching English as a Second Language in Korea." Does that mean that I will be teaching about TESOL in Korea, with my audience being a group of educators, or that I will be teaching TESOL itself, and pretending that my audience is TESOL students?

I got back:
Quote:
Remember! The theme of T.D is [Teaching English as a foreign language in Korea],

not"Teaching English as a Second Language in Korea."

Basically, if you are selected qualified candidate for this position, you will train and teach "English Teachers" who are already teaching in the middle or high school in Korea. So, I guess you have to focus on training "the teachers". That is the only I can tell. During 10 minutes class what you should teach or what you use teaching method is all your choice.

I hope this clears up.

So 10 minutes isn't much time. I've got a million things I COULD talk about, but I'm wondering what would be best to cover. I was thinking of covering my approach to accent reduction. But what do those who have been through this (or sit on selection committees) think?

Did that job in Japan..... you could always try a 10 min thing on how to do good warmer activities. My teachers loved them and it wasn't something they had generally included in their school lessons. (Though many adopted them after training).

Short of time now but do PM me if you want some specifics.

Good luck.

Wait, I think they mean that you are preparing a 10 minute demonstration of what a normal class would be like, no?

Yeah, I think you're right. And I was saying that I could teach the teachers how I teach accent reduction to students. So I'd be teaching teachers how to use accent reduction techniques.

That's one idea, at least. I'm certainly in the market for better ones.

Not to sound negative, but wouldn't they want to see a full uni lesson, or at least materials?

I would prepare a full uni lesson, an hour at minimum, and explain that 10 minutes is not enough time for them to engage you as a teacher. Give them over an hour's worth of material and show them your best 10 minutes. Make sure they understand where this 10 minutes fits into the lesson.

I think it's a rubbish activity and they could learn about your teaching methods in 10 minutes of discussion better than a 10 minute, unrealistic lesson.

Teaching demonstration? Don't do it ... your quals and exp (if you have them) should speak for themselves!

Yes, tell the uni you refuse to do it. They'll understand and hire you right away.

That's not a bad idea.

Agreed. In my experience, teachers make the worst students!

For my demonstration I performed several somersaults, a handstand, and a backflip. I hit my head pretty hard on the backflip, which quickly helped remind me that I was not applying for the PE position, but this was in fact an English instructor's interview. They hired me anyway, saying something about good flexibility.

If your hiring committee is male, you should bring 4-5 bottles of soju in and proceed to down them one after another. They will realize that you will be a good drinking partner, and part of the "team." If you really can't drink, fill the bottles with water before going in.
