hi all

thinking of going to japan late july with my gf. we both have uk passports so i assume a 90 day visa on arrival is ok.

we are going late july; is it going to be raining a lot then?

I was also wondering about the budget necessary for a 14 day trip. Am i going to be bleeding cash?

Another more obtuse question, is Japan a bit samey compared to Korea, or am I going to really feel I'm in a different place for 2 weeks?

Any advice on how to travel a bit more cheaply in japan?

Yeah, you're going to spend a ton of cash. Japan's a lot more expensive than Korea. I lived there for a few years until last September, and one of the reasons I decided to try Korea was the lower cost of living. Personally, I think Japan and Korea are completely different, but it probably depends on your perspective.
I don't know if you're getting a JR Pass, but if you don't want to spend that much money, you might want to look into the Seishin Juuhachi Kippu (if I remember correctly). It's a rail pass you can only buy at certain times of year (including mid-July to August) that allows you 5 days of unlimited travel on any regular JR trains (doesn't include bullet trains and limited express) for around $120. So if you use if for long stretches you can save a ton of cash.
Some of the bigger cities have hostels and or capsule hotels, at about $25 to $30 a person.
I think the rainy season is usually finished around mid-July, so you'll probably be okay.

You can also use overnight buses to travel. I remember it costed $50 to get from Tokyo to Osaka.

If you took the JR (Japan Rail) Bullet Train, it'd set you back $240.

Best option if you were to stay at least a week is to purchase a JR Rail Pass exclusive to Tourist Visa holders. I think it's like $270 for a 7 Day Pass, you can take the bullet train all throughout Japan. Includes normal train and buses owned and operated by Japan Rail.

The weather: usually it stops raining by late July. It'll be hotter than Korea.

Where do you plan to go? I'd recommed Kyoto, Himiji, Kurashiki and Hiroshima.
