What I would do is bring an inflatable kiddy pool and hit the rooftop of my building...I've only been to Hamilton (Itaewon) pool once - and that was twelve years ago in July, it wasn't bad - plus it was mostly westerners and at least westerners know better than to piss in the goddam pool eh?
Anytime I see a swimming pool with loads of kids swimming around in it, I can only imagine them pissing their bladders dry...it's the Korean way you know... |

Hmmm, I'm not bringing an inflatable pool, HAHA. I am coming dangerously close to my weight limit on suitcases as at is.... all those cowboy hats I'm bringing over..
I'll be living in Gwangju though, maybe I'll walk around making swimming gestures with my hands until someone points me in the right direction. |

Gwangju is closer to the western sea, so you'll be able to head down south for beaches, (just stay away from Busan beaches from July to the end of August)
Here are some pics of the east coast sea (up north) from the month of September, not as hot n humid, but nice enough to swim.
And here's my dog

HOLY COW THAT IS A BEACH?!?! Or did God vomit Koreans all over the sand? I can't tell. How is being on a beach THAT crowded even remotely pleasant?
After seeing that picture I think I'm going to roll up my 10 foot deep inflatable pool, bring it with me, and set it up on the sidewalk in front of my apartment building.....
Just kidding about the vomit thing, I have a really dry and twisted sense of humor.... it might serve me well in Korea, or it might not, I'm still debating |
Korean find lots of things pleasant and acceptable that are alien to us. You wil learn hope you're not too paranoid about "personal space". for e.g.
i wish had an inflatable pool here.
ahhh.. humor... that reminds me. i was going to start a thread about that.
my guess is they won't understand/appreciate your humor (I kinda like it twisted myself ) |

In Seoul there are lots of outdoor municipal pools. (try along the Han river) Bikinis are not a problem. The korean girls will check you out with jealousy and envy. The men will act like little school boys unable to control their excitement.
As for tats....as someone previously stated, the culture is changing so rapidly. I've been here for 2.5 years and I probably saw 3 tatoos in my first 2 years or more. With no exageration, I see tatoos daily now. Mostly on guys, but sometimes on girls. It has blown up. Doesn't matter where I go in Seoul, they are everywhere. I remember friends asking me where to go in Seoul for a tatoo and my response was to go to a country where they actually have tatoos. But not anymore.
Bikini it up baby! |

It's really not that bad most of the time. I went several days in a row in August of 2006 and 2007 (peak season) and while it was crowded, to me that added some excitement to all of it.
If you want to avoid the crowds though, the left side of Haeundae Beach in Busan is always much less crowded even at peak times. |

ahh c'mon.. she is...
I give her a thumbs up.
besides.. among her Western coworkers in Korea, she'll be a veritable superstar... our own Jessica Biel
I think billy robby is having a bad day though. Ease up on the "candy"?
I always get a kick of anyone with enough condescension and arrogance to label someone or a topic as "pathetic", cringeworthy, lonely, etc The choice of words is often very revealing |

Cincinatti was great, riverfront...bars, old train depot converted into IMAX - I was there ten years ago for a short time. Good times
Here's a pic taken by a poster on this site a few years back - this is the beach. You can't imagine how crowded some outdoor Korean pools get in the city - the only one I'd go to would be the one in Itaewon, or down in Pusan at a hotel called the Paradise hotel, located right on the main beach - just stayed there 2 weeks ago with my wife - expensive hotel but worth every penny.

Nice dog Cisco..... those beaches look nice, did you say they were up North? Maybe I'll have to check them out....
If you other two want a room I've got some recommendations.... but I don't relaly care enough either way.
Good thing I just wanted to know if it was ok to run around half naked in a seemingly conservative country, and if they had pools and beaches.... I should have posted a picture of a whale, I'm sure THAT thread would have been entertaining
