It is very uncomnfortable for me to wear a shirt. My shirt is soaked when I go running even with a moderate temperature. This makes it very difficult to run in. I ain't no stroll in the park triathelte either. I mean I am not world class but I have won two triathlons back in Connecticut and finished in the elite divison for my age group awhile back.
The other poster is right. Culture changes. 30 years ago you didn't see people walk around with all different color hair. Those who first did probably got a lot of stares but what happened? More people started doing it, people saw it more and now it's no big deal - the culture changed.
While in the Philippines my Korean female high school students saw me shirtless. They were very surprised. A few weeks later they saw me shirtless again and told me that they weren't shocked anymore and that it wasn't a problem. In fact, one of the them would later come up and hug me quite tightly which my wife wasn't too pleased with - another thread one day?
So if they ever go to America they won't experience as much culture shock when they see guys doing this. So I helped them. If they never go to America consider it a lesson in "cultural tolerance".
Hey..not all learning takes place in school. |

I've never noticed Korean guys going topless except on a beach or swimming pool and one time sunbathing in a park (Maybe a Kyopo?). Until TODAY. Strangely.
Today my landlord who is maybe late 70s hobbled down three flights of stairs to have a chat with me without his top on. I wish it had been his 19 year old grand-daughter instead, but unforuntately she's at university or something.
12 hours ago I was pretty convinced that it was un-Korean to go topless in public. Now I think it's OK if you you are over 70 and have a had a stroke which impairs your mobility and speech. So maybe Mr.Triathalon should hold off a decade or three, then it might be cool.. |
Old Korean guys ride bicycles topless all the time along the river paths. |

Local tastes nothing. Is this South Korea (free) or North Korea (dictatorship)? And by the way it is NOT an illegal activity. I see a lot of things that offend me but hey.......
it's part of the price of a "free" society.
Had one guy come up to me and say, "We don't do that here". I replied, "Good, then don't ever do it!"
If any don't like it they can lump it!!!!! |
It is their culture. There are things we don't do in our culture that we expect Koreans to somewhat respect. It's a tricky situation. My friend went jogging without his shirt and people tried to block him, and he would run around them. It doesn't bother me, of course, but I understand people have their sensibilities even in some locales in the US. I read something about some locale in the US being against people doing that. |
