OK here's the situation in a nutshell.
Before I came to Korea from the Philippines I was assured by my boss that there would be no problem bringing my step-daughter here. I would arrive first and my wife and daughter would come soonthereafter (they are both Filipinas)
I arrived and immigration gave my boss and I a very difficult time bringing my step-daughter here. I was very upset because my my boss ASSURED me there wouldn't be any problem. I had to call my wife many many times to figure out what we needed to do in order to bring our daughter here. I was calling her constantly about paperwork, forms, documents that were needed to be signed, photocopied on and on. It got so overwhelming with the red tape that I almost returned to the Philippines. Added to all this disaster was trying to teach and get by in a foreign country. My was devastated with the mess involved.
The phone bill arrived and it was 1 million won. My boss expects me to pay it but I stated that these were not personal phone calls but were in fact work related. I never expected to be apart from my family this long and I think it is unfair that I should foot the bill since it was my boss who assured me that there wouldn't be "any problem".
Should she pay all of it? Should I pay all of it? Should there be some kind of percantage that each one of us pays?
What do you think is the FAIR thing that ought to be done?
Thank you. |

Holy crap... 1mil?
Well dude the crappy thing is... regardless of who is right and who is wrong, he'll take it out of your paycheck.
If you can't bring your wife and daughter, why don't you just go back?
If I were you, I'd tell him you're prefectly willing to pay it, you just need him to take it out VERY slowly ($100 a month?)
Then get your paycheck and leave.
I'm curious how you managed to get a 1mil phone bill. I would call home to the USA on my cell phone about 1x a week and talk for 45 minutes to an hour, and it only cost about $130 |

To be completely blunt, Korean bosses will say whatever it is they think you want to hear, and none of them have a clue about how Immigration works.
It is up to you to sort your personal/wife/children/pet cat situation out. Unless your wife and step-daughter will be working for your boss, technically it is nothing to do with your boss.
So, I don't see that the phone calls were work related, and unfortunately you will be left with the whole sum. |

I know how things go in Korea but I was just wondering what YOU think is the fair thing.
My wife was panicking about the situation. She was contantly calling and going to the Korean Embassy in Manila as well. |

Technically it does have to do with my boss. One ought not to make assurances - especially about laws in their country - they have no idea of. |

The only way I can see that phone bill being that high is that she kept calling COLLECT. |

Well I would ask to see the bill, but it sounds like the bill is your problem, I don't see how you think it is work related? you made calls trying to bring your family over here. If you were calling students parents then it would be work related.
didn't you look into visas for Filipinos before you made this huge step? It would have taken 10 mins internet seaching to find out that the visas for Filipinos (or any south east asians) in this country are not simple, how hard is it to do a little research.
Also why would you assume that your boss knew anything about filipino family visas, do you know anything about indonesian/indian/chinese family visas for your home country? Yes your boss was in the wrong for telling you that it would be simple but come on take some responsiblity. |

Please tell me you are joking. Demand an itemized bill, check it carefully with a Korean speaker. |

I think she's blowing smoke...if she won't show you the bill, walk. You're going to get docked 1,000,000 won, so you won't bet much of a paycheck, but when you get it, walk... |
