I wrote awhile ago about my plans to return to Korea with my Filipina wifeIt is now time to do it.
We are in Thailand now and I dont want to leave her here alone while waiting to process a dependent visa. How easy (any tips welcome) is it to get a tourist visa for a Filipina? |

Hello, I was in the exact same situatiion a few months ago. This is what you will need.
First you must have your original marriage contract and it must be in English or have an accompanying notarized traslation (official). Then you'll have to head down to the US consulate and get a sworn affidavit that you and your wife are married. They cannot certify or vouch for your marriage only issue you an affidavit stating that you are both married. Then you'll have to head over to the Philippines consulate and get documents from them recognizing that you are officially married and recognized as married in the Philippines. If you havent already done that just get ready because it's expensive. When you've got all that together take all three documents (marriage certificate w translation, affidavit from your embassy, Philippine paperwork) over to the Korean embassy/consulate and apply as you are applying for your visa. She'll get it the next day no problems. But a word of warning, pay for the 90 day visa. The 30 day visa is free to Filipinas but you might get in trouble if your school in Korea balks or delays getting you your ARC or if there are other problems. Once my wife was here it only took her 2 weeks to get her F-3. But you must have your ARC before she can apply. |

Thanks for the reply, which is EXACTLY the information I was looking for.
A few questions if I may:
Do I understand correctly that you also completed the process in Bangkok?
Did you apply for her tourist visa at the same time you applied for your E-2 (I ask because I would like to start her process first if it can be done independently)?
The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok has been a bit of a pain in the arse already; did you just need a simple notarization from them for the affidavit?
Thanks again! |

I'll answer your questions in order.
Yes I completed the process in Bangkok just a few months ago. The Korean embassy was very helpful and efficient.
Make sure you hit your consulate in plenty of time. I don't know where you are from but I'mm assuming you are US. The US embassy is only open for about 2 hours in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. THey also close unexpectedly for no reason and no warning.
I applied for the tourist Visa for my wife (C-3) at the same time we I applied for the E-2. I don't think the Koreans will issue her a VISA if she applies by herself. They are really strict on giving out VISA's to Philippine nationals because they have had a bad history of coming to the ROK and trying to find jobs. The only way a Filipina can get a stand alone tourist VISA is if she can prove she's got a buttload of money in a Philippine bank account and even then it's difficult. If you apply together then they immediatley know it is your intention to obtain an F-3 once you arrive so there are no further questions. Also I've heard of some Filipinas getting a hard time from the immigration people at passport control once they arrived and some getting refused entry. The lady grilled my wife when she went through but all she told her was that she was accompanying her husband (me) and that she was going to apply for an F-3 to stay. Better to be safe than sorry.
There are usually two different people working the front desk at the PI consulate. There is a short woman and a tall guy. The tall guy is the one you want to deal with the woman is a hag and wont do anything to help you. You will have to register your marriage with the Philippines consulate and this is about a 3000 baht process. Also make sure you have at least two copies of your sworn affidavit from your embassy and also two copies of your translated marraige certificate. The philippine consulate will take the originals of both and then you'll need those originals to apply for the VISAs at the Korean consulate. The Koreans will give you all the paperwork back so you can use it later in Korea when you apply for her f-3. I'm a little curious, did you get married in Bangkok? If so then you'll have to go over to the Division of Foreign Affairs on Changwattana road (Near Big C) and have all your Thai paperwork notarized and of course that is after you have it translated. That was some of the most expensive parts of the whole process. In all it took about a week to get everything in order and several hundred dollars. But trust me get two notarized copies of everything because the Philippine consulate will take your originals. Let me know if theres anything else I can help you with. |

Also, I thought I might add this. Dont trust the translation people if you need anythig translated into Thai-English/English Thai. Which if you got married locally you'll need both. They frequently make mistakes and if there's a mistake then you've got to go back and have it corrected before it's notarized. Check it well before you leave the translation office. There's many around the embassies. |

Hiya Xingyiman:
Yes, we were married in Bangkok. From that process I get the general idea of what you mean about getting paperwork translated by a certified translator, etc.
We are in Ko Chang right now, it sounds like we will have to camp out in Bangkok for awhile to get the visas done.
Thanks again for posting the helpful information! |

For your information, Filipinas don't work in Thailand as go-gos or bar girls. Prostitutes in Thailand are generally Thai. More than likely if they met and married in Thailand she is a local teacher as Filipinas are employed quite extensively in Thai schools nationwide.
It might pay to take a trip somewhere once in a while. |

I don't know about Filipinas, but I know for a fact that this is a somewhat untrue statement. When I was in Thailand, I remember reading a story about how many prostitutes in Thai are from Myanmar and places like that where opportunity is bleak.
I find it hard to believe, however, that filipinas would bother moving to Thailand to be hookers when they could probably make the same or more in Thailand doing the same thing. Doesn't make sense. |

Come on now. I almost married a filipina, and spent some time with her there. She's currently ABS-CBN's Australian news reporter. Now, it's been 8 years since I was even in the phils., but prostitution in that country is far from dead. Crap, if they want to make more money doing that, they can come work in Osan. I just don't see filipinas wanting to go to Thailand to be a hooker. |

Thanks again for the great info X, you are right about the large number of Filipina teachers in Thailand, my wife is the cousin of a Filipina teacher I know here in Thailand. However, I went to the Phills and I brought my wife here.
BTW, how does your wife like Korea? |
