Just a rant about this ridiculous 'university'.

My girlfriend studies at Kyungnam University where she is attending Grad School. She was invited to study there and it has been hell since the beginning.

The International Student's Office refuse to speak to her (even in Korean) and are blatantly hostile to foreigners.

All my girlfriend has left in her studies is to complete her dissertation. The university has provided her no resources whatsoever, they can't even provide her with guidelines or a sample paper. And this is at a Master's level!! Shocked

an email from my gf today regarding guidelines for writing the paper:

" i have spoken to the dept. head and my adviser about it a year ago and was told to contact the secretary who knows not a word of english but anyway, i asked and was never given any. when i asked again, she sent a file in korean which i couldn't open. i asked her to forward it again but got none till now. i have emailed my adviser about it today but still no reply.

i'm sure though that when i start asking again, i'll be given a similar response so i'll try to do my own thing before meeting him. it's really bad, went to the library this morning but seen no (subject name delted) books.

this feels like playing "

Sorry, no sympathy here.

It took her a year to try to get this in order and she couldn't manage? Doesn't she ever meet her advisor? Why didn't she try to open the file on a university computer, as it was likely in .HWP format? Doesn't she have any friends at all at school? Classmates?

At my school, graduate dissertation guidelines are contained in the graduate coursebook that gets issued every semester. The graduate office will have a copy. Otherwise, she should just go to the authority -- the school copy shop. They know the format inside and out.

I never understood getting a masters here. No where outside of Korea will take the degree seriously.

Does this surprise you that Korean universities are fucking useless?
The education system here is horrifically corrupt.

Nonsense! The system works as smooth as an ex-lax and bran flake breakfast.
You pays your money, you gets your degree...what's not to like? Hell, you don't even have to go to class! Just hang out and play vids!

I was in the same boat back home for both the master and doctorates.
I know Koreans usually do spoon feed but ... if you can't do a thesis (or can't get initiative to find out how to do one) especially at the masters level (and I have seen a lot of foreigners trying to attempt a thesis) then you should not be doing one and should withdraw from the program. IMHO

Ha... my in-laws were discussing me getting an MBA from Seoul National University, and all I could do was laugh. As far as I'm concerned, unless you are studying Tae Kwon Do or Korean Language, getting an MA from a Korean school is like throwing money out the window for a foreigner.

I'm considering the Seoul National MBA program. If they hooked me up with scholarships and such ;p I don't wanna pay for graduate studies here, but if I can line up some government funds for it then sure.

The Seoul National MBA is AACSB accredited, it can't be THAT bad

I just wonder why the OP's gf decided to do her MA there. Didn't she check on the professors? On the requirements for graduation? Didn't she visit and talk to people prior to signing on? Doesn't she have a thesis chair?

And not all programs here go unrecognized. Yonsei's G.S.I.S. is staffed with top-notch professors across the diciplines, and has excellent relationships with several world-class universities.

Not accepted elsewhere? Tell that to the scores of Yonsei G.S.I.S. grads working at finacial houses, government and non-profit agencies, and universities around the world. Tell that to the scores of people who have gone on to do their Ph.D.s at some of the best universities in N. America and Europe. Oh, and, yes, all the credits transfer.

All international grad programs are not equal.

huh? what? do you have any information about this? I'd be interested in finding out exactly how many "graduates" have found something meaningful in a non-Korean environment after finishing

Contact them and ask. I know that I was exceptionally well prepared to do my Ph.D. after I graduated from Yonsei's G.S.I.S. I was also just at a function where the Oxford Ph.D. was a Yonsei G.S.I.S. grad. At other functions I've been to, I've met banking and financial house ranking managers, academics, researchers, and corporate managers, all of whom graduated from Yonsei's G.S.I.S.

I'm not working for them, but I don't mind pumping out a little positive PR for them. The profs are from some of the best universities in the world, and many are Ivy league. The students come from all over the world, and there are consistently visiting students in from Helsinki School of Economics, Chicago, London School of Economics, and other top institutions (the same is true of other diciplines, but I only took my MBA there).

Contact the university. I'm sure they'll provide you with a list of grads and their current positions. Like almost any grad program, you get out what you put in. The faculty is sound. Just take a look at their web site. The students are highly involved and serious about their careers. And, like I said, all the credits transfer.

Am I to assume that your girlfriend is a foreigner? Why not have her go over to the international department and ask some of the foreign instructors that are there for some assistance or guidance.. I am sure some of them might throw a few pointers her way..

Find an online article in the same field of study of a suitable length, copy it, put her name on it and hand it in.

It worked for her Korean professors, I guarantee you.

Actually, the US State Dept. recognizes Korean MA's for English Fellowship positions.

But, they've never been the same without Colin Powell.
