I was in a neighborhood bar the other night and I asked this Korean guy I know if he has ever been to Thailand. He said no! I only love Korea. He showed no interest in other countries and seemed threatended at the idea of liking or being interested in them.
I have heard this before and I find it quite surprising. I think many Koreans love to travel and that loving something about another country in no way diminishes your love for your own country.
I think most of us have a love for travel and experiencing other cultures. It is just weird to find people who are threatened by it. I am sure this attitude exists everywhere, but having the opposite attitude always makes me feel sad for a person that can't not, or do not want to see and expereince other cultures and people. Well to each their own.
Oh, the guy asked me if I liked China. I said that I did. (I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years). He went on to tell me how much he hated China. I asked him when he was there. he said he had never been there. He has never been out of Korea. |

Well he was right about Hong Kong, that place is shite in shite's clothing. Plus it's full of the worst kind of expat wankers and wet as a fish chinese, and don't get me started on the local girls - pass the sick bag. |

Was on a date once with a Korean girl.
Had just retunred from a vacation in Phuket and Bangkok.
Told her how great my trip was and aksed her if she'd ever been to Thailand. I was ill prepared for the bizarre response....
She slammed her fist on the table and said 'NO DIRTY!' along with loads of other criticisms....
I said, yes, parts of Bangkok may be polluted but it has some beautiful attractions and went on to describe how down right gorgeous the islands are and explaiend to her that Thailand is nothing like the way she described and her perception of Thailand wasn't true.
She actually said -
I KNOW!!! But I am Korean and we Koreans think that! It's what WE THINK!!! I don't want to go THailand! We ARE PRIDE PEOPLE!!! UNDERSTAND
and then finished off by banging her fist once more and shouting
PRIDE!!!
I told her being with her was like being with a 14 yr old child, walked out and never even looked back. |

None of this matters since it doesn't concern the best country in the world.

Never been more serious in my life, the HK Chinese are some of the most humourless, unfriendliest, rascist, materialistic people on Earth. Theyre really quite the opposite of their fun loving cousins on the mainland. |

I've never experienced stories like MA_TESOL and Grab The Chickens Levi wrote about, but they sure were interesting to read!
This part was my favorite:

But I am Korean and we Koreans think that! It's what WE THINK!!! |
Even in a homogenous society there is a lot of diversity, and she had no right to presume her opinion is held in common with all Koreans.
This kind of thing- Koreans trying to speak for all Koreans- has happened to me and it always bothers me. |

I don't know if any of you are aware of the bickering that goes on between Koreans and Chinese on the internet. It's really quite pathetic. The Koreans really thought they could charm the Chinese with their "Korean Wave", but as soon as they showed what kind of ignorant bozos they really can be, the Chinese were totally turned off.
China's got its problems, but when Koreans say they don't like China, I just wince. What else can you do with these folks?
By the way, I stopped saying "I like China" a long, long time ago. |

Yup, it occurs a lot. I was in the cafeteria of my public high school last year. The head of the English dept proudly announced (the irony is that I was drinking mineral water at the time) 'We Koreans are the only people who drink PURE WATER after a meal!'
I kind of went 'uh....?'
He said - We Koreans drink pure water after a meal. Americans drink coffee or cola and English people drink tea!
I explained that in both of those countries there is no SET RULE and people drink whatever they want with or after a meal, citing juice, milk, tea, coffee, PURE WATER and many others as examples. I also pointed out tha tI;ve seen many Koreans drinking varied beverages with or after meals.
His reply - same as the girl banging on about Thailand
'I know. But that is what we teach or kids in their textbooks.'
Me - But it's not true.
Him - (red faced) I know. But it is what we teach our kids.
Me (to self) remeber to try and not get into conversations with him, remember the time he explained how Koreans were more evolved because they don't have body hair even though many of them you've seen in the sauna actually do? Hasn't that lesson sunk in yet....? |

I worked as a volunteer for an NGO. The group rehabilitated heroin addicts that came out of the Triad gangs. I was a bit altruistic when I was young. I got burned out and went back to the States where I did an MA Tesol and now I make money and am no longer altruistic.

Trying to figure out why he would rejoice in the genocide of a group of people. Pretty sick actually. |
