What do you think would happen if us PS FTs went on a massive strike by not showing up for work until we all get 50% pay raise? |

They'd realize that they are happier without us, perhaps. |

50% pay hike?
No offense, but you're stupid for making that suggestion. |

Yeah, we'd still be underpaid. Make it higher. |

our job is way better than Hagwon slaves,
and we work WAY less hours then our Korean PS teacher counterparts (who must sign 5 (FIVE) year contracts, and follow the Korean culture of staying late, etc.) I leave at 430 everyday.
and we get airfare, and apartments gratis. (worth around 4 to 5 mil)
if I re-sign, next year I'll get (officially) 30 days vacation, and half my ticket home.
I can't get that in the USA (or Korea) with 2 years of service. (with only a BA)
and plus,
(while I would NEVER do anything to jeopardize my visa):
I know that many PS teachers, who get off at 4:30 (or earlier if they get along with their principal), find the time to teach privates or even work at hagwon part time.
I teach 1 lesson a week, 22 times, and I get paid a decent wage for this. Compared to the person slinging cellphones for Show, or the adjuma selling ddokboki from the cart, I think I'm doing ok.
I haven't mentioned English camps or extra class ($$$$$)
All in all, compared to the (relatively nice, honest) hagwon that I worked at last year, I'm doing good.
That's an understatement.
It's way better than the hagwon, which wasn't horrible.
In case you haven't noticed, Korea isn't particularly friendly to orgainized labor (even compared to the anti-labor Bush administration).
I tried to start a union when I worked at a group home in the US, and they tried to fire me.
I can only imagine what that kind of attention we would get if we tried to organize. I don't really want to find out.
The wouldn't have to resort to hiring dark-skinned people (that's their LAST resort) if we went on strike.
They could just look to the hagwons. |

We'd be deported/fined. You signed a contract...honor it. You don't like the contract, don't sign. |

What? You don't think that refusing to show up for work while one is on a work visa would have negative repercussions? |

They'd just think we all pulled a runner or spin it off in the Joong ang Daily that you all had fake degrees, were caught smoking weed and tested positive for AIDS all in the same day. |

Give me a break. Stop being a fascist.
Workers can't struggle to improve their conditions???
Employers don't dishonor contracts in Korea??????????
Contracts are NOT sacred in Korea, so westerners should be expected to treat them as such. |

Wow! So many apologist....
When did I say anything about forming or joing a FTs' union?
How about FT netizens just doing it for hell of it? Perhaps, PS FTs should set a day and all call in sick.
May be some of us should take some drastic measure like setting oneself on fire like the Korean protester. |
