Hello,

This is my first time looking for a teaching job in Korea and I have a few questions concerning recommendation letters.

Do the two recommendation letters have to be sealed? The EPIK web site says two sealed recommendation letters but a recruiter is asking me to unseal them and e-mail him a scan. Will opening them invalidate them for other recruiters/provinces?

Do they both have to be from former employers? I've only had one boss the last six years and would rather not have to bother old bosses for a recommendation letter. We usually do telephone references here in the US.

Would one professional letter of recommendation (from former boss) and one personal letter of recommendation (from a friend as a character reference) be acceptable to the EPIK program? I'm assuming that province MoE supervisors will be checking these letters?

Thanks for the help.

If you've only been out of uni a short time, you might want to try one of your profs. If you're still close to some of them that might work too.

Based on my experience, your letters of rec. are little more than a formality. Mine were never read or verified. For all that your Korean employer cares, you could write them yourself and stuff them in any envelope with a nice company/school letterhead and logo. Seriously. They should do away with the letters of rec. requirement, and just go with a reference email address or telephone number....

Sorry, a little bit of a hijack here but figured since it's still about EPIK it is okay?

I submitted my stuff to the Chicago Consulate and today they called and wanted me to come in for an interview. I asked twice if I would need to bring any documents and the lady said 'no'. I've been doing searches on these boards and it seems like other people did bring documents? So now I'm all confused. Also, how formal is this interview? What did people wear?

My experience was similar when I took a job with EPIK late 2006. The letters were requested last minute so I just used some old ones I had collected ages ago.

One was from my days in the US Army Reserve basic training. It literally spelled out how I excelled at rifle marksmanship and tossing hand grenades!

I graduated in 1996 and hardly remember any of my professors.

Anyway, are unsealed letters of recommendations still good for EPIK?

Do the same thing that you did for the essay... Google... Copy... Paste... Print... Sign... Done

Mine were unsealed copies of a copy.

That's what my recruiter tells me. I've also to give proof of teaching experience. Given that my previous employer went bust and my previous previous(!) employer is a less than savory character - that probably doesn't remember me, I wonder how I'll manage this one.

Quote:

The proof of employment from an institute must state the following:

1. The exact starting date of the employment
2. Full time English teacher

- It must have the institute seal

- It can be written in Korean or English

- It can be in a simple certificate form

- It must have information about your name, date of birth, nationality, employment period, the name of the director, the address and contact number of the institute, and the date of issuance.

I decided to not take the chance. I put them in envelopes and scribbled across the seal. I also scrounged up some generic office stamps and stamped them with that. (Different stamps for each letter of course.)

I bet no one ever looked at them.

I got two coworkers who are my friends who trained me in at two different jobs to write mine. I sealed them in my own envelopes. No questions asked.

make sure they sign the edge of the envelope.. that's what is ment by sealed letters, not just glued in the envelope. that's what I was told anyways.
