wrote this a couple of months ago when someone else asked:
I interviewed at the Seogu branch (which I think is the main one) a couple years ago. seemed like your typical hagwon i.e. not the greatest deal. boss seemed nice enough but was fuzzy on the schedule which looked very flexible (i.e. changes according to school needs). he seemed reluctant to let me talk to the other Westerners currently working there. they did intensives as I recall and well, it just didn't seem like a great deal for the pay so I went elsewhere. of course that's just one opinion and things may have improved since then, but thought I'd share anyway. |

It's ok as far as hagwons go. The material is very structured so you are told minute by minute what you should be doing and saying. They tend to teach very fast...too fast for the students to actually learn anything.
In terms of discipline, if there is a problem in your class then that is the teachers fault. Students shouldn't be punished, but if they misbehave that's your fault/problem. It got somewhat frustrating towards the end.
They introduced a new style of learning just before I left called 'Live' English. Basically, a role play activity based on a situation. They have dialogues that they have to remember then at the end of the class they 'role play' in front of the class. It's not useful for the students at all and very frustration and boring to teach. All I had to do was correct pronunciation.
As for pay, holidays etc they are really good with that, you won't have any problems at all.
If you don't want any freedom in your teaching then it might be a good job for you, if you want freedom then it will drive you crazy.
Again, just your average hagwon. |
