|
|
Preemptive strike: The AMERICAN Film Institute published lists of the top 10 American films in 10 different genres. Fun list to read through.
"The best genre movies were announced in the CBS special "AFI's 10 Top 10," the latest in the institute's annual best-of shows. The winners were chosen by actors, filmmakers, critics and others in Hollywood from ballots that included 50 nominees in each genre...
"This is why these shows are so important. They keep these films in the cultural conversation," said Bob Gazzale, AFI president. "When `City Lights' is honored as the No. 1 romantic comedy, millions of people will go back and watch it again."

Gazzale said part of the fun of the film lists is the debate they prompt over which movies are included and omitted.
"These countdowns are a collective opinion of leaders from across the film community. Any surprise about an omission would be entirely subjective," Gazzale said.
So I'll play...
Most serious omission: Dr. Zhivago should have been on the Epic list. Boot Shindler's List and/or Titanic. |

Why didn't they have a category for comedy? All I saw was Romantic Comedy, which is not the same. |

I think the lack of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in westerns is pretty glaring.
Is Caddyshack one of the top ten "sports" movies of all time?
While I'm at it, does anyone know the rules for writing movie/book/author names? I seem to recall you're supposed to underline some and put others in quotation marks or something. |

Jerry McGuire is in the wrong category. It should be in romantic comedy. There is no way that is a sports movie. |

While you're at it, there was no category for romantic drama (Casablanca) or just plain drama. |

You can tell a lot of old people voted in that poll. |

'Sports' movies? What video store did these people grow up in? Sports movies are dramas...and usually really lame ones too. |

So far we've spotted a lack of lists for:
comedy
romantic dramas
regular dramas
horror
porno
I think we can add film noir to the list.
Maybe AFI is saving these for next year's lists.

For years now I've felt the voting age should be raised to at least 35. People younger than that are just too ignorant (in the real meaning of the word) for their own good. |

Yes, the list should reflect the entirety of film across the last century, not just frat boy movies from the last five years. In a similar poll for rock/pop music people all voted for songs from their era: i.e. if they grew up in the 60s, they chose 60s songs. If they grew up in the 90s, they chose 90s songs and so on. With film, the "ageism" is not going to be quite so bad, but will come into play.
They should make a special category for "The Happening". Utterly clueless films. Geez that movie was bad. Haven't seen a worse one, ever. Zomboid acting, down-syndrome dialogue, editing autistic, script amateurish, characterisation non-existent, plot pointless, musical score dumb. I'd rather stick my doodle in a blender than sit through that movie again. And yeah. I didn't like it.

No, the best comedy of all time is The Naked Gun. Or maybe South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. |
