Hi,

I just got accepted in the TALK program and the woman in charge called me and said that I got the job and all that...but then I havent heard from her. She hasnt given me any information about the next procedures. I emailed her asking about how to get a CBC, the deadline for the documents, etc...but still no response. It's only been a few days, but I really am getting worried. She said they made a special consideration for my case as my University degree is not from the US, UK or Australia (I grew up in the Philippines, but am a US citizen) but since I have an MA and some experience they said that I would be great for the job but then...havent heard from her. Could they have changed their minds? Any advice? Should I wait it out or go back on the job hunt?

thanks!

With your degree and "some" experience, why would you want the TALK program?

what do you mean..."I smell a rat"?

First of all the TALK program seemed kind of cool (cultural learning, etc) and second of all..yeah, it was hard to get a job due to the new E2 regulations wherein you have to graduate from a university from the US, Aus, etc. but I graduated in the Philippines. I am a US citizen because my dad is American but I did a Master's in an internationally recognized Uni in the Philippines. So its been challenging to find a job that 1) because I am Asian looking 2) because I graduated from a Phil Uni (despite it being intl recognized)

My English skills are up to par with any other American as 1) Practically everyone speaks and writes in English in the Philippines (Koreans even go to the Phils to learn English, 2) I have a MA in Literature 3) I went to an international school 4) After graduation I lived in Hawaii and SF (I now life in Berlin, Germany) but due to the regulations, none of the schools are willing to hire me despite having an MA and yes, some experience.

If it hasn't been hard enough.....so ugh, yeah, thanks for your "helpful" comment

i would recommend that you keep doing your job search until you actually sign a contract. things can always fall through at the last minute, just keep your options open. show interest in all of the schools that sound half decent, have the interviews, you can decline later.

you may even find a better position.

Relax.

I am sure everything is fine. They are pretty busy at the moment, so give her a few more days. If she doesn't respond to you by Monday, let me know.

I will ask her to contact you directly at that time.

maybe because you ARE from the P, she didn't think you'd expect a legal visa??? Shocked Shocked

which is why she's not returning your calls.

did they agree to set you up legally or has that not been discussed yet?

Honestly, in spite of the fact that your diploma was issued from a PHILS university, you can do MUCH better than the TALK Program. Trust me when I say it will be immensely disorganized, unsupervised, and you will be placed in a low priority school. It will be a horrific experience. You will be underpaid, overworked, underappreciated, and ignored. The managers of the TALK Program have no idea what they are doing, and will not follow through on the terms they offer. Expect the least. And don't say you weren't warned in advance.

Invest the time and energy in securing a public or private school, in spite of the E-2 challenges of your circumstances.

In the long run, you deserve much better. We all do.

There are no other legal options for you to find something better.
I have not heard of one private school or one public school outside the TALK program that will offer you a job.

You are from the PHILS so the only job you can legally get in Korea right now is a TALK job.
You cannot get an E2 visa yet. This may change in the future, but not yet.

You can however, get one of these President's Scholarship visas they are dishing out for the TALK Program.
But that is all they are....a scholarship visa.
So that means you do not get the benefits of a E2 visa teacher in Korea.

You are getting a job that no one else wanted. You do not meet the basic requirements to get a visa so you accept a compromise in contractual conditions.
But there is no use continuing the search for something better. You need a visa to get something better. You're not going to get it.

As for your recruiter... with the TALK program, recruiters were asked by TALK to find some resumes for about 30% of the normal recruiting fee.
They were asked to find a resume and hand it over.
TALK register you with the Korean consulate in your home country and they both do the rest.
It would be nice if your recruiter dropped you a line though.
I guess he/she thinks the job is over...according to his/her contract with TALK it is.

If you are feeling a bit lost, try contacting In Hee at the Talk offfice

김인희(Inhee Kim)
TEL (82-2)3668-1392, FAX (82-2)764-1328
E-mail [email protected]

You should be getting a call from the Korean consulate soon and be advised as to what docs you require for the visa.
No idea what comes after that.

Hope this helps you a little.

Well, she finally did get back to me and it turns out I did NOT get the position. It was such a shock because on the phone (during the interview) she told me that I had got it and that her assistant would contact me with all the information and paperwork. She said they had discussed it together and felt that I was even "overqualified" for the job and that they would be very happy to have me. Then I get this email from her that TALK declined my application. I feel totally blindsided.

ugh!

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate turn of events. I don't know if you can get a visa for teaching in Korea (honestly, I don't) but I do know there are other countries out there where you can teach.

If you have your heart set on Korea then I guess you should continue trying, but otherwise looks elsewhere and try not to get too bitter about this experience.

Don't believe everything you hear from a Korean. She didn't even put your application in. She knew you were overqualified and is probably looking for something more rewarding for you to apply for. This is your first experience of Korean Culture.

I think you should contact other recruiters. Do you by any chance have a US Passport? If so, you shouldn't have a problem getting a job.

While you may feel this way at the moment, take consolation in the fact they have actually done you a favor. Trust me. Cool
