I have a couple 1 gig flash drives but i went today to buy an 80 GB external hard drive. My intention was to connect it to the USB port on my DVD player but I found out that this doesn't work.
I am curious why the flash drives work and the external USB drives do not.
If there is a way to get it to work, id love to know that to but I have looked around on the internet and it doesnt look like its possible.
anyone know why this happens? |

most flash drives are formated in FAT32.
I assume you formatted your external drive in NTFS (XP default) and I speculate that the DVD player may not be able to read NTFS.
It is also possible that it just can't read the particular file(s) you have on it (wrong codec or file extension). AF3, DIVX, XVID, x264, MKV, WMV, MP4, etc.

is it possible to format the external hard drive in a way that would be compatible with the DVD player?
i didnt see much after looking at this on the internet but the things i did find seemed to suggest that there was no way of doing it.
if it isnt possible, i am just really surprised. to me it seems there shouldnt be much of a difference between a flash drive and the external drive. so i am wondering if this is intentional, to keep people from having a large video library (which is probably downloaded illegally) in a compact space.
it definately isnt an issue of incorrect file type. the same files worked with the flash drive. the DVD isnt recognizing the HDD, it doesn't even power on when i plug it in. although, i tried attaching the HDD to both the computer and DVD player (so that the HDD powered on), and still no dice. |

Is it a 2.5" or 3.5" HDD?

| the 80gig will be NTFS while the thumb drives will be fat32. The other possible reason is that the DVD player is just not putting out enough power through the USB to spin the hard drive |

How many USB cables do you use to connect the hard drive to the DVD drive?
Blackjack mentioned the 2 things I was about to say. If you're only using one cable to connect the 2.5" drive to the DVD player then you will need to change the cable to be able to connect to 2 usb ports, this is to get the extra power that it needs (though I have seen HDs work with just one though not reliably).
I have a feeling that its probably the file system of the HD that is not being accepted by the DVD player. The player may have been developed using Linux and reading external drives formatted in FAT16 or FAT32. |

i was using one USB cable that splits into two directions, so the cable connects to the HDD and then to both the computer and the DVD at the same time. this at least got the HDD to power on but it still wasnt recognized.
when i tried using a cable that only connected to the DVD, the HDD wouldn't even power on.

You can partition the disk with a 32 gig partition in disk manager.
This can then be formated to FAT32 from a command line prompt.
syntax is:
format volume [/fs:file-system] [/v:label] [/q] [/a:UnitSize] [/c] [/x]
So assuming your drive is "K"
start
run -> cmd
(and in the black popup window type:)
format K: /fs fat32 |

I found a program called Swiss Knife that lets you format larger sizes. I formated the entire hard drive in FAT32 and now it powers on when i connect it to the DVD.
but... none of the files are showing up in the menus.
is it fair to say that the DVD still does not recognize the HDD? or is this impossible since it is powering on when connected? |

You know what, instead of running around maybe you can tell us what this dvd player is. I've actually haven't heard of many dvd player that lets you connect hard drives to.
If you have files on the HD, try renaming them to 8.3 filenames (ie. movie.avi instead of indiana_jones_and_the_secondlast_crusade_DIVX_klaxxon.avi) and see if that makes any difference. |

Looking at the ad and comparing your player with the next one (SV-D597HD) it doesn't look like it can play divx or movies from a USB connected HD. Flash drives should not be a problem and it plays DIVX CDs/DVDs as well.
There is also a possibility that the USB port is the old version (1.1) which is a lot slower than the current one, hence a liability in playing movies from a HD. |
