No, no, no. Don't ever tell him that he frustrates you. That's the only reason he posts. Insult him all you want, but please don't play into his reactionary high-school ego; it's all he has. He's shown time and again that, when it comes to facts and cogent debate, he's sorely lacking.

scotticus, what does this have to do with my point? I don't know. It seems as though Westerners change their position on this a lot. Scotticus, If westerners think they are superior to Koreans why is it so bad if Koreans think they are superior?[/quote]

Oh come now komerican, you know that your people feel inferior to Anglo-Saxons. That's why looking Korean is considered inferior in itself. Hence, the double eye-lids, the whitening of the skin, the scorn at small eyes, the embarassment at having a big (mongolian) head.

Not to mention that most Koreans were living in abject poverty without indoor sanitation 40 years ago. You've come a long way baby, but talk to me when your people figure out seatbelts, driving, proper sanitation, sexual equality, realize homosexuals exist, that black people are not monkeys, that beating your wife and child is cause for police action-just to name a few reasons why westerners feel superior to Korean culture. But kudos to your dictator-inforced economic miracle. Stalin would be envious.

I'm just saying that Koreans have one of the biggest economies in Asia while many Filipinos live in squalor or in urban ghettos. So Koreans can feel superior to them in the same way Westerners feel superior to Koreans, according to your post. For example, Many Filipinos and Thais copy Korean fashion and admire our skin so I guess I can think of them as my inferiors.

As I said before, there are many people who think America is the best country in the world. Isn't it kind of relative? Why can't a Korean only love Korea? People in our countries are like that in many cases in the countryside. It is just more common over here since they were closed off. They only started opening up like 30 years ago. Of course, some of them are encouraged to be very intolerant and their teachers should correct them and encourage them to think outside of the box.

Nope. Thinking outside of the box is a disease here to be beaten out of the kids. Conform or live a lonely life of freakdom.

Sure, no problem. Why do they admire your skin? I've been to Thailand 3 times, and the people I saw seemed as light or lighter than the average Korean. Also, Koreans have that Mongolian mole, do Thai's envy that?

It might be true they like light skin. But they're looking to whitey for that , not other asians. A most handsome korean man would be laughed off for the option of just about any western man in those countries.

(Just handing out a dose of tit for tat ......don't spend much time worrying about these sorts of things really..quite comfortable in my own skin...so to put it.)

I don't get why Komerican even posts here anymore. All people do is attack him. While I don't agree with him on many things, I think he does make well laid out arguments and he certainly doesn't deserve to be attacked for having a different opinion of things.

The reason for Koreans going on about their culture so much is much simpler, I think: it's because they're taught to say these things in school.

We were a highly nationalistic bunch in school in England as I remember, repeating all kinds of stories to ourselves without any overt encouragement from teachers. I think that's natural and happens all over. But here the nationalistic half-truths or blatant distortions come from the actual textbooks and teachers with little pretense of objectivity. That gives official authority to a lot of invidious rubbish. Not to mention silliness like the '4 seasons' idiocy.

I was schooled in England my whole life too and apart from the 'we won the war' I never heard or went round saying any of these 'stories about ourselves' that you mention. I certainly don't remember any nationalism either..

Where were you schooled...? Can you please give examples...?

Just the usual 'We're the best' at this, and 'We have the best' of that. 'We're better than <insert country here> because....'. Things like 'We have the best TV', 'We have the most inventors', 'We're tougher because....'.

Haha, please do some fact checking on komerican's arguments before you make a comment like that. If you want a good example of him outright lying in his "well laid out arguments," look at his comments on the mad cow issue. A single poster took almost every "fact" in his argument and ripped him apart, providing links for every lie or half-truth he told.

The fact is, people don't hate komerican for his arguments, they hate him because he's a repulsive troll of a human being. And don't even try and argue that we don't do the same thing to the opposite side of the troll coin (the Korea-haters). Plus99, or whatever his name is, gets ripped on constantly for his asinine posts, and Miles Rationalis left the site (not sure if he was banned or not) riding on a literal wave of hatred from other posters. Those are two examples off the top of my head.

For all the bitching and moaning, most people here are middle of the road about Korea. We hate the apologists and the haters pretty equally.

Because koreans are demonstrably not superior (au contraire).

Yeah, it's true, many kids really believe Korean culture is the best,
and have almost no curiosity or interest in other countries. They learn all this crap before middle school and it stays with many of them forever.

Took the words right out of my mouth!!

The fact that Park Jung Hee gets so much praise and is considered one of (if not the best) best presidents in South Korean history tells you how much they value things like human rights.

I appreciate a good troll, I do. komerican is NOT a troll-she's filled with self-righteousness and self-loathing at the same time, and it's manifested in her posts.

Show some compassion, people, and do not reply.

Let's turn this around. What if The US Army (along with other countries) Entered Korean territory and then helped divide the country for half a century? Also, the US returns Koreans back to Korea when they enter the US illegally.

Guess you do have a reason to hate the white man. Maybe you should change your name though.
