Around 2am on Friday night, I was catching a taxi in front of Hongdae. You two were getting out of the taxi, so I wanted in it. The driver was angry at you because you racked up a 10,200 won fare and had paid the man $4. In US currency.

I pointed out the problems, though I guess you knew them and were just being dicks.

Me: You owe the guy 10,200 won. You gave him $4. This is Korea, they don't take American money here.

You: I gave him more than that.

Me: Don't you have Korean money?

You: He got his money.

Driver: Bah bah bah bah bah bah bah!!

Me: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, you guys are nuts!

It was stupid and funny all at the same time. I can't believe the driver didn't get the hell out of the cab or call the cops. He just drove away, and I took another taxi as not to receive his wrath on the way home.

I was drunk and laughing at it all when it happened, but it really is bad for the foreigners here, especially in Hongdae where foreigners are seen as criminals and its often hard to catch a cab at night. I am going to make some assumptions and guess you were soldiers because 1) You paid with American dollars, 2) You were large black guys, 3) You spoke very Americanly with a strong ebonics influence. But that doesn't matter. You ripped off a lowly cab driver and soiled the image of foreigners. And made me laugh.

They very likely were soldiers. It is a shame and it makes us look bad, esp. Americans. But when you have tons of 18 to 24 year old males who volunteer for warfare you're going to have incidents like this on a Friday night at 2a.m.

I dunno. Next time I take a cab I'll tip the cabbie.

I was believing this post until you mentioned the "two large black guys." I assume that you're white. Now, considering what would happen if such a confrontation occurred back home, I find it hard to believe that the result would be different here.

So your first issue is that you don't believe me because I stated they were black? Don't believe me then, move along. I mentioned they were black simply for demographic reasons, not racial reasons. It does make them more likely to be soldiers in Korea. Notice how I said "that doesn't matter" after their description? It's about how one group of foreigners (in this case, they were probably soldiers) making all foreigners look bad. To dig even deeper, soldiers are more likely to not care as they are temporary visitors in Korea, more temporary than most teachers, but the average taxi driver or Korean probably doesn't take this into account.

Your second issue is that you don't think back home a cabbie wouldn't have gotten out of the cab or at least called the police. Most would've done something. In Korea, the physical threat to the driver is significantly less than in the states, making the driver more able to do something besides just drive off. I told the guys they were wrong and called them "nuts." It wasn't a threatening situation.

The point of the post is not to rip off cab drivers and poor folk. Rip off rich people if you are doing be a dick, and don't do it as a foreigner in Korea.

since they are probably soldiers though as you say, they're not likely to encounter this thread. so did you just want to share the story with us? perhaps you could edit the title to make it more sensationalistic. "foreigners ripping off cab drivers!" or something. Surprised

How about adding an "OMG!!"? Or deleting the entire post? The world would be better if I did that, I know.

I don't know that they were soldiers, I didn't ask them, but I'm making an educated guess. If they don't read the post, maybe a newbie teacher or future soldier in Korea will. I'm just doing my part for society, Koreans and foreigners alike.

I've got another story to share. Today I talked to the produce man in the local grocery. He spoke some English, we talked about teaching, he usually greets me by my first name and smiles. I didn't rip him off.

Being a jerk crosses all demographics and occupations. From the soldiers I've come across around Korea they are all dumba$$ grunts. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to join the army and kill people. Ripping off taxi drivers is all in a days work for america's finest.

ya know what - who cares - like you said, the driver didn't call the cops - maybe he said something racist in the car - wouldn't surprise me at all -

let it go already - Foreigners already have a bad name here - because we're FOREIGNERS - it doesn't matter if we all screw up or are all boy and girl scouts - we are FOREIGNERS - therefore inferior Shocked

What an asinine argument. That kind of thinking is EXACTLY what we constantly rail against here. How many threads do people bitch about how Koreans stereotype us and treat us like we're all responsible for what the US government or other foreign teachers do and then, here you are, making the same argument.

Sound like cretins to me.

Stealing, thats well funny ha ha ha. Ripping off a guy who might well NEED that money for his family ha ha ha ha. Hilarious.

But the funniest part is they intimidated him enough to just walk off, thats really funny

If I were in the army, those are the kind of guys Id wanna have fighting alongside me in the trenches, stand-up guys

Subhuman scum

Also, its not exactly suprising that you cant get a taxi in Hongdae, when youve got people pulling stunts like this. Also also, its hardly suprising Americans have a reputation for being pig-ignorant and arrogant as well

it is NOT an asinine argument - it is based on having used taxis in a number of countries and living in nyc for a number of years - I consider myself pretty well versed in dealing w/cabbies - Korean cab drivers are by far some of the worst - it kills them to get out of the car to help me w/ a bag or excess packages or groceries - I've been treated rudely and cheated a huge number of times; lied to - when they acknowledged they knew where they were going and then stopped to ask directions - !!

I could write a huge rant on K cabbies but won't - it's not worth my time - they will never have my sympathy - yes, I know they aren't all like that but the majority are - so f*ck'm - as I said - that driver could have argued about it but he didn't

and also I said - the OP didn't know all the facts and neither do you so you can go beep yourself as well -

Keep telling yourself that. Justify the hypocrisy. It's complete bullshit, though, and anyone with half a brain knows it. And what's this about the "majority" of cabbies being bad? In two years in Korea I've had ONE cabbie try to *beep* me over, to which I said, "ahni'o" and gave him the fare I owed him and no more. Where do you take taxis that you get so regulary ripped off... because by your little rant up there, you're saying more than half the taxis you take try and screw you in some way.

I still can't believe you would justify fucking over an honest person merely based on some of their peers being assholes. Congratulations on failing Critical Thinking 101.
