I noticed the above picture on a few ads while riding the Busan subway recently, and wondered what it was all about.

It's the "Fruit of Love" campaign. The best way to describe it would be as a cross between Remembrance Day and a United Way campaign.

Quite simply, you walk into a bank, drop a small donation, and receive a Fruit of Love pin. The money goes toward Korean society's most needy. It's run by an organization called "Community Chest of Korea", which appears to be affiliated with United Way International.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's caught on very well here yet. I bought mine this morning at a Pusan Bank branch, and my Korean co-workers thought it was a Christmas decoration/ornament.

Here's the website: http://www.chest.or.kr/eng/index.html

I could be wrong, but it looks like you're supposed to wear it from December 1st until January 31st...

Thanks ... I will donate tomorrow ...

If you want something for your (and I mean all of our) students ..

A Remembrance poem ....

Maybe one month and 5 days late ....

Quote:

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I know that is not exactly a Remembrance Day thread, but if anyone is interested a great song of Remembrances Roger Clarke's Waltzing Matilda.

I saw the ads too, and wondered what it was for.

The new pin looks pretty cool this year.

It has been in Korea for more than five years!

Pusan may be a little slow on the draw.

within the last week i've noticed them on more than a dozen students. I think they are "giving" them out at school (maybe with a donation?)

I dont' know how long it's been in effect, but back in '99 I saw folks with 'em, and in 2000 I saw more.

If it's a charity - good on 'em. SK needs more of them.

Speaking of which:

dogbert is right, the pin has indeed been around for decades. The current "Fruit of Love" ad shows how the pin has evolved over the years.

For some reason the pin I received is different from the image on the website - there's no flower pot! I wonder if I was given an old one, or what the deal is.
