at the gym I workout at, I've brought several CD's, because though tolerable, the music they always play is beginning to drive me up the wall .. though I suppose it could be worse.. like Celine Dion...

or a Korean version of Celine Dion..

but they play uptempo pop non stop (think of I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbi world) a kind of italo-disco, which just SUCKS!!!!

or Korean pop.. which also SUCKS!!!!!!!!

I brought in a trance CD which I actually had a guy in a gym in Colombia burn for me... it's really outstanding.... and after 5 minutes the guy turned it off.. didn't like it... back to Korean pop.

brought in an American pop CD I burned.. with stuff I liked.. the moment a rap or rappy song came on... he turned it off..

I am not an "American snob" when it comes to music, either. In Latin America, I developed a taste for Spanish pop., which I much prefer to most American pop...but of course their taste are very similar to ours anyways... all my students loved Linkin Park... when that first CD of theirs came out...

disclaimer.. I do not live in Seoul.. but in Gyeonggi-do..

anyways.. are there any clubs in Seoul where one can go and listen to some cool music?? (I prefer trance/electronica in a club setting)

if so..perhaps I'll put up with the hour subway ride in and out and coming back home at 6-7am on the following morning Shocked
(I'm like a vampire.. I love staying out late, but have to be in coffin before sunrise Smile

also. any recommended Korean radio stations?

Did you get into a band from Chile called Los Tetas? They sound like the Beastie Boys but all in Spanish. I don't know what people here would think if they heard it.

Anyhow, welcome to Korea where the music sucks. Yesterday I went to Rolling Hall to inquire about tickets for an upcoming show and all these people were in line staring at me and giggling. I'd like to know what kind of music they were waiting in line to see. I'm sure it sucked.

It depends on which area you're in, but there are lots of clubs that play great EDM in Seoul.

B1 (next to the Hamilton Hotel, Itaewon) might have the best resident DJs in Seoul. No cover charge, reasonable drink prices, and a better looking, upscale crowd that you don't normally find in Itaewon. Tech-house and electro seem to be the preferred genres there.

M2 in Hongdae is a sure-fire bet for a busy EDM club. It was one of the first large EDM clubs to open in Seoul, and it is consistently packed every weekend. It used to be the premier venue for international DJs, but with the opening of several new clubs (see below) it seems to be sticking with local talent now.

Also in Hongdae is Cargo, a small, old school basement club that leans heavy on the drum and bass/jungle crowd. Definitely not a mainstream place, but if you're looking for variety and a high-energy crowd that is there for the music, I recommend it.

Answer in Cheongdam-dong (Across from Hotel Prima) probably has the best looking crowd and one of the nicest spaces in the city. However high cover, a stuffy crowd that is too busy trying to look sexy to enjoy the music, and a very limited and extremely overpriced drink menu have ruined the atmosphere most nights I have attended. They do bring in top notch DJs frequently, and I have been surprised on occasion.

Volume is the new heavy hitter in Seoul. This gorgeous, massive space with tech-heavy decor has brought in more powerhouse DJs in its opening months than Seoul has seen in years. However, that is their fatal flaw. The EDM scene in Korea has not matured enough yet to warrant bringing in guys like Tiesto and Bad Boy Bill at the same club, back to back on a single weekend. Cover gets up to 70,000 for some events and drink prices are a bit high. As one older student told me, "It's beautiful and empty."

Keep an eye out for posters around the city that advertise events at the Walker Hill's Gayagum Hall. These infrequent parties draw large crowds of extremely attractive, well-dressed women and boast some of the bigger names in international EDM. I try not to miss these events. Cab fare to and from the hotel can be costly, as well as entry fee (up to 50,000 in some cases) but it's well worth it to rub elbows and chat up some of the finest women in Korea. Celebs are frequently spotted in the booths that run the length of the multi-tiered venue, and ample space makes sure that even with the biggest crowds it never seems too packed. Drink menu is limited, but reasonable.

Hope this helps you, and anyone else out there looking for EDM action in Seoul.

Oh, and Korean radio sucks ass-barf through a coffee straw.

thanks seoulsucker...

a particular dress code in these places?

I prefer to go clubbing in jeans and something like a cal klein t-shirt (aka "nice" t-shirt with no slogan/lettering) and dressier shoes to go along with the jeans (meaning not sneakers)

is this acceptable dress?

also times these places open/get going?

also, since I don't live in Seoul... how would I "find" these places? (aside from the place alongside the Hamilton Hotel, etc which should be easy enough to find by asking, map, etc)

p.s. by EDM you mean Electronic Dance Music, yes?

Yup...EDM = Electronic Dance Music.

Pretty much the only rule that I have seen strictly enforced in any of these clubs is the "no open toe sandals on guys" rule. I guess there are some liability issues with broken glass, etc.

Cargo is a very unassuming "come as you are" kind of joint. No one dresses to impress there.

M2 is a mixed crowd. Everything from hip-hop gear to suits.

B1 is a bit dressier than the normal Itaewon dives, but no one will bat an eye if you show up in shorts and a tank top.

Answer is a much, much dressier club in one of the more "fashionable" districts in Seoul. The Walker Hill events are in the "dress to kill" category as well.

However, the outfit you mentioned is pretty much what I rock when I go out. Jeans, sensible dress shoes or clean kicks, and a nice tee or polo on top. I've never been turned down at the door for dress code, with the exception of the previously mentioned sandals.

The international rule of "dress smart and act like you belong here" applies to the night clubs here as well.

As far as finding these places...it can be a bit tough.

B1 is the easiest. Itaewon station exit #1, turn right at the KFC and walk up about 10 yards. Listen for house music on your left, and head down the stairs. Full by 11, packed by 12, raging by 1.

M2 is a bit tricky. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the station. By subway, go to Hongik University station on line #2, Northwest Seoul. Head out exit #5 and go left. There is a small alley on your right, then a one-way street. Turn right at the one-way. Eventually, you'll have to cross another street, but continue down that path. You should see rows of cars parked in the middle with people walking and driving on either side. Continue down this stretch. You will see a strangely designed building on the right, and a "Buy the Way" opposite at that intersection. Turn right. Walk about 30 yards and turn right again. You'll see a sign for "OHOO", the building that contains M2 and a few other clubs.

Cargo is even tougher to find. I'm not even sure where to begin.

Answer, tell the cabbie something along the lines of "Cheongdam-dong, Prima Hotel ahp-ae seo ga juseyo." It's a bitch to get there any other way.

Walker hill as well. To save on taxi fare, head to Guui or Gangbyeon stations on line #2, East Seoul. Then grab a cab from there and just tell them to take you to the Walker Hill.

btw Lekker, no am not familiar with that band. Perhaps they came after my time... I left there in 2003.

the only Chilean act I know is La Ley, who was pretty big back then.

lots of raperos in many countries. especially Cuban and some Venezuelan.

ever hear of Molotov? a Mexican act, which I suspect would be close to the group you refer to... I kind of like Molotov Smile (lots of pinche gringo references hahahahaa)

btw.. you do know what tetas mean in Spanish, don't you?

it refers to the "T" part of the female anatomy, except if I recall correctly it would be LAS, though aren't sure on that.. many slang terms are not instinctually feminine or masculine based on common sense ( e.g. Cuba, el bollo, the female vagina and la pinga - their term for our ahemm... p-enis)

I work out at my Uni gym because it's convenient. No squat rack so I gotta learn this crap.

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=Qls96q4Phs4

And the music they play there, very hit and miss. Some of it is tolerable, some of it absolutely awful. The worst is the song "Tell Me", oh man that song is so so bad. And, bafflingly, it's really popular.
