There is a list of "cultural tips" on GEPIK's website. http://cge.ken.go.kr/eng/skin/layout/sub_06/cultural4.asp

Most of them are obvious, but a few of them are eyebrow-raising and/or head-scratching...

Quote:
10. Schedules and plans are often subject to change

This is an honest admission if I ever saw one. Laughing

Quote:
There are often traffic jams on the road during rush hours

Laughing

Quote:
Some Koreans are less punctual than westerners but usually they are more tolerant than westerners

Slightly ambiguous (does this refer to tolerance in general or only to being tolerant about lateness) but definite BS either way.

Quote:
You can take a walk at night more safely than western countries because guns are not allowed to possess according to law.

Another example of Koreans thinking of the USA as synomymous with "the west"... gun control is strict in many western countries...

Quote:
When you drink alcohol with seniors or elder persons, you'd better turn your head around.

Head-scratcher. Does anyone know wtf that one means?

When you drink with people older than you, when you raise a drink (your drink should be lower than others) turn away from the senior to show your respect. It is common in Korea.

Korean ladies do that half turn in bars or restaurants to show their respect to foriengers if you drink with them.

Priceless!

I especially like "11. You may be insisted to drink alcohol beyond your capacity." Very Happy

It's great saying "no" to those idiots when they offer soju, or too much of a real drink.

Same thing with dry seaweed.

Take one for the team! I'll buy 2 for you to enjoy in the privacy of your own home, and you will be helping the idiots overcome their cultural insecurity.

Yeah, friends or whatever will do this in front of me and I just tell them to knock it off.

I just don't like the way they use "you'd better" incorrectly. What are they going to do if I don't? Arrest me?

1. Rolling Eyes It's not that spicy. The writer needs to take a trip to Mexico or Louisiana.

2. I've encountered both kind and rude people. In my general experience (and I freely admit that sample selection aka selection bias may be in play here), the folks in their late twenties/early thirties strike me as incredibly rude to foreigners and quite selfish in their behavior. At least there was an admission about the racism here.

3. No problem with this one.

4. Bollocks. There is ZERO regulation of the dog meat trade and quite a few pets--of any breed--find their way into the pot.

5. More bollocks. If this were true, we foreigners older than the punks coming up to us would never have any problems with said punks.

6. Pretty much a given. Heck, my mother (of German heritage) would never let us wear shoes indoors.

7. Yes. Yes, they are.

8. Sometimes?

9. I don't buy this one for a moment. If that were so, you wouldn't see the littering or other selfish behavior so prevalent.

10. As a poster above said, nice to see an honest admission for a change.

11. I don't drink but from what I've noticed, the average California drinker of my acquaintance could put any of the "insistors" under the table in nothing flat.

12. Wouldn't know. I don't go to those places because I'm not interested in cultivating the fungi at home, so to speak.

13. Rolling Eyes Like the teens don't know what the words mean!

14. Rolling Eyes Then why all the comments about how bad our society is?

15. I can buy this one.

16. Some?

17. I've seen jams that've lasted for many hours.

18. Waaaaaaay behind the times here.

19. I buy this one for males. If I were a female, there's no way I'd believe that line of bollocks.

20. Wow. Out of the myriad of bodily function noises, that's probably the only one considered impolite here. Personally, I rather listen to someone blow their nose than imitate hogs at slop (which is the usual symphony presented).

21. Piss on that. I've been to plenty of functions where meals are served and there's never been any insistence that anyone at all wait to dig in.

22. Maybe. Maybe not. But the dudes holding hands, wearing pink, carrying their own purses...

23. Unless you're shopping for a knock-off.

24. Got news. You don't have to there either unless it's included in the price of the room ("X% gratuity added to bill").

25. Yep.

26. Yep. Additionally, you can ask if they have one that hasn't appeared on the table. They might be able to whip it up for you.

27. Never had the problem.

28. You're better off buying the bags at a large store, such as Home plus or E-Mart than at a small local place.

29. Well, Konglish is part of the Korean language.

30. Tolerant of their own lateness but not of yours.

31. Don't know about this as I don't drink alcohol. How many of you drinkers have noticed this?

32. Of course not. Quite often it's intentional.

33. I buy this one, too. The "don't you" tag question sometimes is answered the opposite of the way a native English-speaker would answer.

So, let's see. I get 14 I disagree with (actually it's 12 plus 2 I half-agree with). That's a score of 58% (Failing) on the author's part.
