I'm on a biz trip for a week and found out the facility I'm living/working in for the week has blocked all other email services except for their own (I don't work for said company, so I don't have an email account with them).

While I'm waiting on the bureaucracy to figure something out, I've got a deadline today and gotta get access to my email.

I've figured out that I can get onto gmail with Firefox, but Firefox only stays open fo about 20 seconds before disappearing.

They say that if I plug my own computer onto the network it will work fine (though I didn't bring one because they promised me a laptop here for the duration of the trip), which makes me think it's something on this actual computer, rather than the server.

I also tried installing Hotspot Shield and Opera, but neither of those work.

The most I've been able to do is change the file that is displayed when you come to a blocked page to say "Let me see my gmail!!!!"

Any ideas on getting around this?

Oh, I also tried putting firefox on a USB drive, but the computer only sees the USB drive as 'read only.'

The additional problem is the Korean Windows, so I can only understand about half of the screens and warning windows that pop up when I try to do stuff.

PC Bang isn't really an option as I'm at a company retreat center in a fairly remote location.

I tried proxify and got this message:

"You are connecting to Proxify from an IP address which has been associated with abusive or fraudulent activity. Due to the risk of fraud and potential for abuse, Proxify cannot allow you to use the service via this IP address. "

Oh and the OReilly workaround doesn't work either. I tried that one earlier. Just tried to do it again and it's the same.

Looks like I'm SOL.

My coworkers can't even use their own laptops because the server automatically installs all the security software as soon as they plug in.

Not happy about this at all.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

having software automatically installed on your computer. that sucks. that
s one reason to go with either linux or apple. Less chance of that happening.

here's an idea. make a linux disc, or see if you can get it on your usb key and then boot from that. then you should have no problems.

What about using pop3 for email (thunderbird or outlook), you still won't be able to access gmail for chat but at least you will get to check your emails. you can install thunderbird on a thumb drive (same as opera)

Ooooh, I like the linux and thunderbird ideas. Will try to install one or both of them on my drive when we make a PC bang run later tonight (closest one is 20 minutes away supposedly... ugh...)

don't bother with linux at the moment (unless this trip is a frequent thing), to many things to go wrong (i.e the computer may not boot from usb etc)

for thunderbird portable

http://www.download.com/Thunderbird-Portable/3000-2367_4-10526818.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10841933

and don't forget to enable pop3 in gmail

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273

hope this helps
