So during the past university hiring period, I jumped the gun too early and signed a contract with a college and then had an interview with a better university, but said I couldn't attend because I thought I shouldn't back out of the contract I had signed a few weeks earlier.

The semester went by and I realized it wasn't the 'final job' I thought I was going to have while in Korea. I had put in the years at other universities and figured I was going to get an upgrade where I would be happy for the rest of my years here. Well the students in my departments were mostly terrible... not just poor students (meaning no work ethic), but poorly mannered people in general
(the kind who talk continually while your speaking with no shame/or who get up and walk out of class while your speaking). Let's just say that teaching wasn't a rewarding experience this past semester.

So I applied to a few jobs near the college including the one that I had passed on the interview before. And what do you know... I was offered the job, and I've agreed to take it. So I'd like to know what your best advice is on leaving my current contract.

Now keep in mind, I HAVE AN F2 VISA.

I'm thinking I should put off telling them until a month before, or perhaps until the very end of August to make sure that the college doesn't try to get out of paying me during my summer vacation. Who knows... maybe they would manufacture some way of firing me and robbing me of those months. At the same time, I recognize that I could be leaving the college very little time in hiring a replacement if I give them notice with the 30 days required in my contract. I'm pretty sure I won't be required to tell the college my plans earlier because I don't think I need a letter of release with my current visa status, so I'm curious what the rest of you would do.

By the way, I'm so excited to have landed this new job (my dream job) and am so happy to be leaving the job that ended up being nothing like I was hoping it would be.

I'd give them 30 days notice.

I'd give them at minimum 30 days notice, or whatever your contract states, and also try to offer a few names of people who would be interested in the job, assuming you don't think they'd pay you for the summer. Tell them to put an ad on here.

You'd be leaving them high-n-dry before the semester, and killing off a future reference (if that matters to you).

If I felt they weren't going to screw with me, I'd tell them as early as possible.

I can't give you specific advice on your situation, but if you're teaching English I'd brush up the difference between "your" and "you're" before you start your new job.

To me, the best rule of thumb for internet forum etiquette is, 'if you wouldn't say it to their face, don't say it hiding behind your internet connection.' I really think that is a valid guideline.

Erica, people who correct grammar online are really reprehensible.


I hardly doubt you would have the nerve to be so priggish in person. It really calls into question your character.
