The wife and I just got an offer for Avalon school in Youngtong. This is our first time teaching in Korea. I got offered 2.1m and my wife got 2.2 due to experience teaching in the US (of which I have none, although I was an English major). Just wondering if anyone had any insight about this school specifically or the area.
This is the first offer we've gotten, should we hold out for something better?
Thanks |

Hold out. Someone with teaching experience in the States can make A LOT more than 2.2 here in Korea. |

...errr..his wife DOES have experience. So, therefore take a job that will pay wifey 2.5+, and if they still pay pay hubby 2.3, fine. With this teacher shortage, even an off-the-boat guy should get 2.3.
Plus, I hear this particular school is awful. |

Even without teaching experience you should try to get 2.3+
I was making 2.0 without any experience, and that was more than 3 years ago. |

You have an English major..that should count for something at least. Even without experience, you should be starting at least 2.2 with Hagwon.
With no experience, I started at 2.2 at public school with a non education major. |

Wife should demand 2.5 and you should demand 2.3. Don't let them snowball you with the lowest amount. An inexperienced korean teacher will make 1.9 and be part time!!!! |

How is that? Did you negotiate for it? We are currently seeking a public school job as well, and the recruiter says the salary is a set pay scale. Like so:
1. Lvl. 1 Teacher : 2.3M
Have two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions plus (A) a Teacher's Certificate for elementary or secondary school; or (B) a TESOL/TEFL certificate (min. 100 hrs.); or (C) a Master's degree
2. Lvl. 2 Teacher : 2.1M
Have (A) a Teacher's certificate for elementary or secondary School; or (B) a TESOL/TEFL certificate (min. 100 hrs.); or (C) a Master's degree; or (D) a Bachelor's degree with at least one year of teaching experience at accredited institution
3. Lvl. 3 Teacher : 2.0M
Have a Bachelor's degree, but no experience or certification as outline above
I'm starting to see why so many people hate recruiters. The one who offered us the Avalon job listed above said it would be illegal for us to teach in public school without certification... |

The recruiter lied.
My boyfriend works at one of the Yongtong campuses and I used to work for Avalon in the past.
I will be leaving my public school gig with GEPIK to go back to the company and the Yongtong area myself in September.
Feel free to pm me with any questions you may have. |

You could get more money, but the area you'd be working in is really nice. I've seen that hagwon before and I live in Yeongtong myself; it's a great, clean area with all the amendities you'd need (plus the air is clean). |

I'd say pass...
Avalon...and many franchise/chain schools keep wages low by constantly hiring new teachers. Plus, these schools typically have low teacher retention rates...partly because teachers will find greener pastures after their first year...or because many teachers find themselves leaving before the term of their contract expires.
In my opinion...you're not going to get much better of an offer from that particular school. |

I heard Avalon was on the good side of the hagwon world. I actually heard nothing but good things about it when one opened up in Uiwang this year, so I applied but got rejected. I ended up taking public school instead.
I heard Avalon's curriculum and work hours were good, and I also heard they don't f*ck around with their teachers much. |

I can attest to being F*cked with by Avalon in a variety of ways. The sad thing is that as much as they put me, and others, through, it is still probably a middle of the road type place. There are definitely better hakwons, but there are definitely worse places too. They have been aggressively expanding and franchising recently, so take that in account as well. Conditions at individual schools will vary. The location you are talking about didn't exist when I worked for Avalon, so I can't tell you anything about it.
That salary is definitely low, I started there as a newb 3 years ago and was making 2.3 mil after getting 2.2 for a three month trial period. They always low-ball, but if you bring something to the table and have some negotiating skills, they will go higher. I had an MA, but no relevant teaching experience. |

Yes, to the OP: talk to the foreign teachers there and see how they like it. I've seen the outside of the place, and I've seen there buses (one is permanently parked in front of my house) but I can't attest to how good it is.
Just because the chain itself is reputable doesn't mean the individual hagwon is. It goes the other way too. I have a friend who works for Wonderland (when they hired him from Canada they said the name was: "Guro Language Institute" because of Wonderland's terrible rep) and he loves it! It all depends on the individual hagwon. |

Is that part of the method-school chain based in London, with the lessons with a set series of questions? |
