Had a thought the other day. Many of us here have been mildly amused with the antics of the mad cow lunatics, but apart from the odd spray here or on other fora, don't really say much about it outside in the real world. As part of our stay here, we are banned from taking part in political life (unless on an F2/5), so there are few ways of showing dissent. To that end, how about a massively huge extravaganza of a 4th of July BBQ? What better than staging a cultural event that really says phooey to your faux science, nationalistic hatred and generally carping about a country that not only saved your asses, but provides working and educational opportunities to so many of your people?
Hopefully if the ban is lifted beforehand there will be the chance to purchase US beef from supermarkets and make this a reality. If not, maybe someone with a link to one of the bases could at least rustle up a sample and we could just make do with Aussie stuff for the rest, albeit mischeviously labeled. I'm envisioning having it out in a park in central Seoul somewhere with lots of Budweiser, star spangled banners and Springsteen's "Born in the USA" on high rotation. The more ideas the better. Anyhow, what's to lose, after all everyone likes a day outside in the sun getting plastered and eating red meat.
By the way, I'm not even American myself, although having been called Miguk saram so many times in the street you'd guess I was. This should be open to people of all nations, even Koreans! |

I read on a bbq party thread recently that cooking in public places, even parks, is illegal. The poster said he had to cook it all beforehand. |

Probably one of those unenforced laws like "don't run red lights or drive on the sidewalk". I remember when I played football here seeing adjoshi teams we played whip out the burner and stew up a communal jiggae in the park afterwards. Thanks for the heads up though. |

Are you suggesting it might get out of hand? |

I forgot to mention, I am interested in this if I'm not busy. It also depends on the atmosphere. BBQ with expats vs. BBQ with expats with banners with posters with megaphones while antagonizing Korean passersby |

I didn't intend for this to be an overtly political event. Thus I feel that posters and megaphones should not be used. Subtelty is the key. |
