Most of the time the government does tells the truth. When they don't it makes news and not the other way around. Of course many of their predictions never come true and often their analysis is off. But That isn't a case of being truthful or not.

One example? This is the third time I've asked for an example of the government telling the truth, even though you say the government tells us the truth "most of the time." After three requests, I'll have to conclude that you can't provide an example of the government telling us the truth.
And yet, we're supposed to believe what the government says about a particular event in history without question?

Not really. Not with all the hotheads who post here, that's true. But it's a shame that such an interesting topic is not being discussed more thoughtfully. I was just reading a little of what Raul Hilberg has to say about it:

That last sentence pretty much sums up what this thread was originally about. Norman Finklestein has paid a very high price, for having dared to set the record straight.
In fact, Hilberg thinks Finkelstein understated the problem, and didn't go far enough:

I get the impression that there are some posters here (from some of the posting) that think Finklestein was out to deny the holocaust or some such thing. In fact, he is very well aware of the horrors of the holocaust, being the son of two of its survivors. Rather, Finkelstein believes the holocaust has been misused for financial and political gain. For example, he demonstrates that the number of survivors (not the number of victims necessarily) have been exaggerated, in order to extract more compensation, often from parties that he and others (including fellow Jew and Historian Hilberg) felt were not obliged to pay it. Not only that, survivors who got compensation directly (say from the German government) fared much better than those forced to deal with the Jewish Claims Conference set up to distribute the 'extorted' compensation Finkelstien writes about. A lot of this money doesn't seem to be getting to the people who are supposed to recieve it, many of whom are dying before they ever see a penny - while other people seem to be benefitting from it.
