I'n going to Shanghai for 10 nights with a comfortable amount of money(US$1500). I've already paid for my hotel so all my dosh is just for eating, drinking, and being naughty. Is this enough?? I'll have my bank card with me just in case but I don't want to touch that unless it's an emergency....

Has anyone been to Shanghai? Can you tell me the average costs of food, booze, taxis, etc?? Do you know any good hostess bars that are affordable for wandering bums like me or are they all just for rich businessmen??

What interesting things can I see/do while I'm there? e.g. can I take a day trip to the Great Wall??

advice please,

BB

A day trip to the great wall..... Laughing

I liked some of the satellite cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuxi etc. Most of them you can get to within a couple of hours. So it's possible to do in a day trip. Shanghai is fast becoming a big modern city while all of these other towns are a lot more stereotypically Chinese, old temples, farmers coming in from the country-side in traditional clothing madly staring at you, finger up their nose to the second knuckle. At least try and get to one of these places and check the contrast with Shanghai. If you set out early you could possibly also get up to Nanking / Nanjing in a day and check out the Rape of Nanking Museum. Really gruesome stuff but interesting nonetheless.

Hostess bars - I have no idea.

One thing that is priceless is the English signs in the taxis that say something along the lines of "Drunkards and Psychopaths not permitted in the taxi without their minders". Razz

Have fun.

Did you check a map of China? As far as I know, the sight-seeing places for the Great Wall are near Beijing... which is an overnight train ride (12 hrs or so, don't remember exactly) away.. so yes, you can do it on a daytrip, if you take the train to Beijing the evening before and then get back to Shanghai 2 days later in the morning... but if you go all the way to Beijing, you might want to do some other sight-seeing there too...

By the way, I forgot to mention food etc is very very cheap in China! I think the average wage of a worker is about 200.000 won or so, so you can imagine public transportation isn't very expensive!
