Hello everyone!!
well it looks like I'm off to Thailand on July 26th for 9 days. I know it's rainy season but really.... how bad is it??!! Can you still lay out in the sun for certain periods of the day or does it just rain for 1 week straight allll day??
Also, we are flying into Phuket but should we stay there or is there some nice beaches around the area that you can reach by boat (that aren't so..."touristy")
For this month what would be the standard rate for a place on the beach? Do you suggest we book ahead or just go ?

Sorry for all the questions.. its my first time going and I wanna do it right!
thanks

There are couple of sages here like Fishead Soup, but I am thinking in rainy season, just go and try to get the best accomodation you can get in Phuket instead of booking ahead.

If I am wrong, Fish will set us both straight.

Oh no, I just used 'straight' in a Thailand thread.

Typically in Jul and Aug the rain is much heavier on the Phuket side than the Samui side. You have 9 days, plenty of time. Suggest you head over to Samui and up to Phan Nga for a little less rain.

If you head to the North, the rain should be over. I stayed in the North last summer and the rain was in May-June... July-Aug was hot!

It's low season so you should be paying less for eveything. Pay no more than 500 baht for you're hotel unless you're planning on going 5 star.
When it rains it pours you might be spending a lot of time playing connect four and Janga

When it rains, it doesn't mean it rains continously. It may only rain in the morning or in the evening if you're lucky. September and October are usually the heaviest months for rainfall.

If you stay in a guesthouse in Phuket, you'd pay around 500-600 baht, more if you stay in a hotel. Just go have a look when you get there. Islands from Phuket, but are very touristy are Koh Phi Phi.

As others suggested, go to Koh Samui side and you'll get less rain. From there you can go to Koh Tao or Koh Phangnan.

have fun

Do you have to bargain for lodging, or will the prices be set?

They are generally set. You can always talk them down. Never go on the Taxi drivers choice

Yes Phuket is infamous for this. The Blood suckers wait for a new crop of fresh meat to arrive at the ferry terminal or airport. They act really friendly and claim they can get you all set up.

They'll first send to you Patong beach and claim all the hotels are booked solid. But they happen to know a few places that have a few available rooms.

You pay double what you need to pay and the hotel owner slipps the taxi driver a thousand Baht.

These guys will burn you every time. They've also got the same crop on Khosan road Pimping the Massage parlours. Wat Pho is never closed.

I went to Pattaya last year and had a hoot. But, somebody told me that it has become saturated with Russians. Furthermore, the kind of Russians that are annoying and obnoxious.

Is this true? Is anybody on here currently in Pattaya being annoyed by Russians? Shocked

There are all kinds of Nationalities there. It's up to you which ones you want to hang out with. I noticed there was one Go Go bar featuring all Europian Women. I never went in there.

If you're looking for a nice beach to chill out on Pattaya is not the place to go. The beach is not that great. It's really a short distance beween where the sand starts and the water comes in. That short patch of sand is often covered in beach umbrella's.

If you're looking for a really nice beach go to Krabbi. However Pattaya does have it's moments. It's more of a Go Go bar place.
