| When I took a group of students to Canada one of them was able to board the plane from Korea with a boxcutter knife in her pencil case. It was discovered by security at Narita where we had a lay-over when we were clearing security to get on our connecting flight to Canada. That incident is probably indicative of the general competence of security in this country. I do hope Korea never becomes a target for serious terrorists. If an angry old drunk can burn down National Treasure #1 I'd hate to see what some well-trained malevolent people could do. |

This is brilliant. Imagine saying some excuse about an accident on the road. "I am sorry I ran a red light and hit you but my brakes weren't working properly somehow."

Besides the Kim family South Korea hasn't pissed anyone off except their own people.
this is odd, b/c I remember the entry security at 3am being a pain in the ass. I had to take apart my clothes and whatnot. |

Thats a very good point.. Domestic terrorism is not out of the question either.. Japan has them fruit cakes I am sure it could happen here too. |

Back not long after 9/11, my son and I were on flights from Korea to the US. He had a notebook computer along with our other bags. We were searched twice in Korea and twice at Narita. It wasn't until we arrived in the States that a TSA guy announced, "Scissors!" He held up my son's laptop case and asked whose it was. My son raised his hand. The scissors were in a zipped pocket of the case and had probably been there for a year or two--put there--and forgotten--by his mother from when she used the computer.
No problem--the scissors went in a special trash bin and the TSA and National Guard fellows just laughed about it (the trash bin was filled with other such "errors"). However, it showed to me that the Korean and Japanese security checks are nothing more than show. Koreans search your bags at check-in and also when you go to board your plane. At Narita they are searched at the security entry-point and also spot checks when you board your plane. You would think such "thorough" checks would catch the "errors".
I just got back to the States yesterday for summer break. Same-o, same-o at the airports. Korea and Japan still do checks that the US did away with some time ago. Korea even intensified its checks; until a year or so ago, they only did spot checks when boarding the plane, but now they check everybody (whereas in the US they pretty much did away with checks upon boarding). |
