The government has decided to proclaim new sanitary rules for U.S. beef and beef products reflecting the additional Korea-U.S. talks that ban shipments of beef from cattle older than 30 months in the government gazette on Thursday. The new sanitary rules take effect the moment the rules are posted, marking the official resumption of beef imports from the U.S. after weeks of uproar over the issue that put the government under massive strain. |
That's TODAY! Costco may very well be the first place that US Beef appears... but it seems like the bigger stores (e-mart, etc) will hold off for now.
If anyone's going to Costco, have a look in the meat section for the US beef and let us know if it's there! |

Let the US beef flow. I am so happy to be able buy and eat US Beef soon. Nothing personal against the Aussies but your beef tastes like donkey! |

I can't wait for Macdonalds to start making it's famous Big Mac with American Beef. This is the best thing that's happened in years. |

I bet that's not going to happen for quite some time. I'm thinking in years here.
Because of the recent controversy, the market's been poisoned and it will take a long time for consumer Kim to regain confidence in American beef.
that said, yeah - it would be great. |

Pah! They'll have forgotten all about it by this time next week. |

How many Koreans would turn down a chance to eat steak on post. Not many. |

Koreans' faith in American beef will be revitalized as soon as they see the price tag. That is, unless they have to scoop off the cowshit to actually see the price tag. |

There's a place a block from my school which sells black market steaks from the US military. |

I'm not sure 'poisoned' is an apt word in this context, but yeah. I wonder if the market will ever recover to the $285 million level. (Isn't that the right number?)
With many of the kids brainwashed into thinking American beef will kill them, at least some of them will never get over the prejudice. I wouldn't be surprised if the market share never recovers. |

I've actually stopped eating beef for general health reasons (and red meat generally).
However, if I see American beef I'm buying 50,000 won worth. |

I don't even eat beef for ethical reasons. But I'm tucking into as much American beef as possible on priciple as soon as it gets here. |

If I have it confirmed that US beef is back I will go to Daegu from Busan, get a Costco membership and then barbecue while inviting random people to join me... |

The complaint was that US beef was being sold as Korean beef by butchers so they could make a killing on it. Even though shops weren't appearing to sell it, they were -- tons of it.
The same will happen. Can you imagine a Korean not choosing to make a buck over being patriotic? They will sell US beef as Korean at Korean prices, and swear up and down that they're not selling US beef. |

I don't usually buy American beef (the Australian stuff is better and cheaper), but if I see it at Costco this week, I'll be sure to buy some just to make a point.
Kinda related, but on the plane to Tokyo last week I asked the steward where the beef they were serving came from. It's an American carrier, so I assumed it was American beef. Bingo.
How many of the umpteen Koreans on that flight were complaining it was US beef? None. How many were eating it? Most of them. I turned to the ajosshi beside me and mentioned he was eating American beef and wasn't he afraid of dying from Mad Cow? He just shrugged and kept on eating.
Which leads to a new twist to an old old riddle: If you're in a forest and no one is there to hear you protest about US beef, will mad cow still kill you? |
