No, hardly at all, it's like being in Seoul, thinking and pretending you are in New York. In real life, New Yorkers don't really worry about their appearance 24/7 and they eat a lot of American Beef. The taxi's in New York are a hell of a lot more expensive and New Yorkers in general tend to be a bit more open to foreigners.

Please.

Innit.

I'm going on holiday to New York tomorrow and it's going to be very depressing to come back to this vacuous, culture-free, shiny-baubles-and-gewgaws, peasants-in-polyester, fewer-ideas-than-surnames, shithole excuse for a modern capital city.

Has anyone ever read/been told that Yeouido is "Seoul's Manhattan". I read/heard that all the time when I first came here 3 years ago. I would ask Koreans, "Oh, yeah? Where's Harlem, then?". It just doesn't makes sense.

Besides, only desperate cities compare themselves to others. Do you think New York calls itself the "Paris of America"? Be what you are and work to make it better. You can't be the "New York of...". NY is NY. That's it. That's why it's famous and people love it. There isn't any other place like it (just like Paris, Rome, Tokyo...etc.).

Killadelphia is the Paris of America. The architecture is kind of the same, the set up is the same (rich people in posh neighborhoods in the middle, not so rich people in sketchy neighborhoods outside, people are rude as all hell.) When reading about Philly and tourism, they actually say "It's the Paris of America!"

Come on, be original.

yeah, I heard that about Yeouido also - a few years ago and was excited when I got off a bus there and thought I might actually enjoy myself!! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

since then I've learned not to be so anticipatory of Western culture in a non-Wesern environment and/or restaurant.

Seoul is just Seoul - maybe if they'd stop building those god-awful highrise apts it would help, a little anyway.

the most ludicrous aspect of comparing Seoul to New York is the fact Seoul really just doesn't have any decent architecture and people like me, who have lived in New York, will remark how much they miss architecture here.

I live right beside Tehran road, and this place doesn't resemble New York at all. It figures that a Korean would say something like that.

You guys are really reading too much into the NY analogy. The original quote was: "sometimes feels like she's part of a New York-set movie", which is pretty different than saying "she feels like she's living in New York".

Thanks Stevie B. Sure, it's not as catchy as, say, Soul of Asia, but as it was a 5 second knee jerk reaction to US hyperbole about Iran being a state sponsor of terror, it's not so bad.

At the time of the Shah, he lend a large amount to South Korea to built public utilities because no one else would. But Korea never paid back a penny (to my understanding). And stop confusing the people and the government. They are living in hell but they can't do anything about it.

having lived in new york before my arrival here and now residing on the road in question now, i guess i can give a fair assesment of their similarities.

Terahnro has a lot of tall business buildings, comparable to, well, any major city. The roads are wide, thus not similar to nyc. The sidewalks are existant, thus not similar to nyc. It is clean, thus not similar to nyc. There is less smell, and in general just a nicer place to be.

Yes, there isn't much culture on the street, but there isn't much culture on wall street either. If you want to say korea is boring, that's fair, but for a business street, it is pretty nice (although many of the buildings in nyc have the charm and architecture of centuray old building which obviously is not the case in korea).

As a side note, it seems as though anyone refering to nyc assumes it is manhatten. This would be fine, but it's hard to explain to people that their yankees, mets, giants, jets etc. don't play in their nyc...sorry for that rant

Ginormousaurus:

90% of the population are against this govt.. The other 10% are making so much money that they don't give a damn with the rest of the people. They use religion as a mean to control all. they don't even practice the Muslim religion. It is a made up religion. And they keep changing the law to suit themselves.

Life has become more unbearable with Ahmadinejat as president. They are killing people left and right. They have no political, economical, and social freedom. Only if you know the amount that they are stealing. The wealth belongs to the country, not for the individual satisfaction.

Your friends fall into 2 catagories. Either they are very religious, not even the true religion. And the other part is they are making a lot of money. If they defend this government and they do not fall under any of these catagories, then I suggest they put their pride aside and admit the truth.

Other countries are worried about Iran making nuclear bomb and what Ahmadijat said about Hollocaust. But no one cares about the people. I feel bad for the general public.
