So I've been in the process of arranging to get a local police department in BC, Canada, to do my CBC, sending them the necessary paperwork, etc. Today I found out that someone with my same (not terribly common) name and birthdate has a 'serious criminal offense'. I remember that the last time I applied to get one to work in BC schools they said that in my case they had to fingerprint me, though they were able to do that right at the police station. I guess that was the reason why. Now, it seems, the local police department can't just use those ones again and it needs to go to the 'national office'. I've had fingerprinting done by the Korean police but apparently the local police can't use those. Now it looks like best case scenario is that I finish my contract, go home, and start the visa application process from square one again with my school.
What really annoys me is that I do have an RCMP CBC from 2004, and have lived in Korea since November 2004. Despite the fact that I'm about as happy a camper as you'll find at my school, this is enough to make even me contemplate saying oh screw Korea - let them find some 20-year-old American student to do my job. |

How ridiculous. Don't they have place of birth too or something? Anyone called John Smith is out of a job soon then. |

Sorry to hear about this. That's really a bummer.
What about middle names? Do you have the same middle name as the culprit too? |

Problems like these often arise when bureaucracy, Western or Korean, comes up against a sound idea like a criminal background check.
What do I mean? You've been here since 2004. A check from 2004 should suffice. What's the reason for this? None. Now they're at risk of losing another teacher who, if your online personality is anything like your real one, has a strong work ethic and makes a positive contribution to the Korean education system.
I know it's cliche, but it still needs saying: Korea Sparkling! |

Apparently. My name's common enough that there are about three people with same first and last name in the Vancouver telephone directory and about ten with the same first initial and surname. Maybe my name's more common in Ontario where my dad's from, but the odds of there being someone with all three of my names born on the same day, let alone having a criminal record, must be about 1/1,000. |

That really sucks.
I think your school likes you so in any case they will probably be prepared to jump through all the paperwork hoops to get you back again. just a matter of patience i guess. In the meantime..a nice holiday awaits..

Such problems arise even more often when any bureaucracy comes up against a really bad idea like a criminal background check.
What do I mean? Ol' Swirlyface, whose case was the immediate precipitant of the new regulations, had a clean background so it would not have prevented him from getting a visa. Furthermore, he committed no crimes in Korea. And the vast majority who do commit such crimes have a clean background.
So now this phony boogeyman is causing very real teachers to either leave Korea, not come in the first place, or even when they want to be here, it prevents them from doing so through screw-ups like the OP. |

How about, distinguish from that person by having a different national ID number or home adress?

Yeah - a nice holiday 1,000km away from anywhere I want to go or haven't already been.
Yes, my school I'm sure will try to help - one of my CTs went to Masan Immigration today to try to get more info. But, as to be expected, they're clueless and leave everything to the last minute. Furthermore the school district is not very big and is just as clueless. None of us are not even sure of the extent to which it's under EPIK control and apparently it doesn't look like the EPIK exemption will apply. |

That sucks. But maybe this is a good opportunity to think seriously about whether to leave Korea. |

that's is the fundamental problem with the information age.... anyone can manipulate it to mean almost anything, therefore no one trusts the data... not even the cops or the government... (i mean Canada here, but also Korea). |

That is really unfortunate. I hope that you can get things worked out without too much hassle.
That being said; last I heard there are close to the same number of Canadians as there are Americans working as teachers here (Canada pop. 32 million, US pop. 300 million). There is a much more likely chance that a replacement would be a 20 year old Canadian student to do your job. |

You must send a letter to the editor of the Korean Hearld.
and maybe you can add to it a little information about other problems EFL teachers are having because of the new rules. Maybe you can be our national spokesperson. And, if The K H likes your letter and wants to publish it, maybe they can help you to get your letter in a Korean paper.
