A few years ago, I bought a pristine July 1919 National Geographic Magazine. One article in it was all about Korea at that time. As I just set up a new 3-in-1 printer/copier/scanner for my mother, I thought I would scan that article and put it up on one of my sites. As copyright law says printed items before 1923 are public domain, I believe I am o.k. putting them up.
You can see the web album here: http://www.koreanarchery.org/NationalGeographic1919/
If there is a larger image you would like to see, I also put up the larger images in a subdirectory called /large/ So, for example, if you wanted to see image ng35.jpg you could go to http://www.koreanarchery.org/NationalGeographic1919/large/ng35.jpg
I hope you enjoy the article. It is interesting to see Korea as it was 89 years ago and how much really hasn't changed in some ways... |

The map says "Sea of Japan" and "Takashima". Nice!
And Korea was called "The Hermit Kingdom" like it is now.

Notice the section about dog meet.
"Dogs were bred for food."
I love the part about the 'eye test' for foreigners. |

This is great, any chance you can scan at a larger size so I can read the article? |

Ya.....bigger please. The one image is large enough, but all of the others are way too small. |

As mentioned, if you read what I wrote above, the larger files are in a subdirectory called /large/ |

Agreed. Large ones would be nice.
Also, if you could, try to straighten up the ones that are cockeyed. |

Looking at the picture of the hunting lodge.
I wonder when the last Siberian Tiger disappeared from the peninsula?
Anyway thanks again Bluelake. |

To read the article, type in the large file number, start at 25, and continue.
Great article, thanks!
Anyone know if there are national geographic articles about south korea from that time or previous to it?
Very interesting! |

""at first they were content to silently watch my everymovement....they crowded about for closer inspection of the strange person who had suddenly appeard among them as if from another world"" Wow...things have not changed much since 1919!!! |
