It doesn't get more retarded than this, folks.

Sens. Larry Craig and David Vitter co-sponsor Marriage Protection Amendment

by PageOneQ

Two United States Senators implicated in extramarital sexual activity have named themselves as co-sponsors of S. J. RES. 43, dubbed the Marriage Protection Amendment. If ratified, the bill would amend the United States Constitution to state that marriage "shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), who was arrested June 11, 2007 on charges of lewd conduct in a Minneapolis airport terminal, is co-sponsoring the amendment along with Sen. David Vitter (R-LA).

Craig, who entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, was detained and charged for attempting to engage in sexual activity with a male undercover police officer. His arrest and plea became public two months later. At that time, Craig attempted to withdraw his plea and enter a new plea of not guilty. To date, his efforts have been denied by the courts.

In July of 2007, Vitter was identified as a client of a prostitution firm owned by the late Deborah Jeane Palfrey, commonly known as The DC Madam.

With a Democratic controlled Congress it is unlikely the bill will be brought up for a vote in either the Senate or House of Representatives.

A voice mail left for Craig spokesperson Susan Irby went unreturned. Attempts to contact Vitter's press secretary Joel DiGrado were unsuccessful.

The full text of S. J. RES. 43 follows:
#

110th CONGRESS 2d Session

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES JUNE 25, 2008

Mr. WICKER (for himself, Mr. VITTER, Mr. CRAIG, Mr. ROBERTS, Mr. INHOFE, Mr. BROWNBACK, Mr. ALLARD, Mr. THUNE, and Mr. SHELBY) introduced the following joint resolution; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

JOINT RESOLUTION

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission by the Congress:

"ARTICLE"

Section 1. This article may be cited as the Marriage Protection Amendment.

Section 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
Absolutely hilarious. Diaper Boy and Sen. Wide-Stance want to 'protect marriage'. These guys...who can't even protect their own marriages...want to keep gay people from getting married or even having civil unions. Notice the lack of mentioning of one of the main causes of marriage breakups; infidelity.

Well, what can you expect from Republicans? This is the same crowd that voted against Mother's Day after all.

To be Republican is to be a hypocrite. They want smaller government unless it affects their pocketbooks. They come up with all these vice laws and are usually the first ones to break them. They'd rather believe in lies if it makes them feel better and more secure. They dislike immigration but most of them wouldn't be in the US if it wasn't for immigration.

This would be funny if it weren't so stupid, not to mention a serious misuse of the Constitution.

And is there nobody in the GOP who can see that it's REALLY bad p.r. to have these two particular gentlemen promoting this particular piece of legislation? Even if the leadership has no formal control over what their members do, you would think that they'd have some means of pressuring Craig and Vitter to stay as far away from "family" issues as possible.

It's just pot stirring to try and draw the Dems into a debate that would hurt them with conservatives who might be leaning lefter this year than in the past.

And a chance for both these wankers to wag the dog.

I am voting for McCain and I could care less about either one of those laws.

"And is there nobody in the GOP..."

There probably is, but none of them will say much, if anything, about these. Congressmen and Senators propose Constitutional amendments all the time because it sounds like it's doing something when you aren't really. You have to actually get the amendment onto the floor and passed (which requires cooperation and active support) from the party leadership, and right now both houses of Congress are controlled by the Democrats. These bills are just election year strategies that candidates can use on the stump for coverage and then most likely forget.

Besides, there's a good chance that these guys' constituents are convinced they were framed or were the victims of nefarious Democratic or media shenanigans. Liberal media bias. You can be sure that if Fox News even mentions these bills and these guys, that is the line they will take.

I don't know...it will take more than gay marriage 'wedge issues' to save the GOP's bacon this time.
Even pushing this garbage amendment won't get the voters out, seeing as how 'popular' Vitter and Craig are these days.

The Faux News folks yesterday were musing over the low chances for McCain and the GOP in the fall.

Guns are off the table thanks to the Supreme Court. So that leaves Abortion. Problem is, McCain's flip-flopped on that and the conservatives are aware of it. So basically all that's left is fear and recent polls show that's not working either.

The voters want change that affects their lives, not change that affects someone else's life.
