The Big Island is really diverse. You have lava flows and intense rain (Hilo receives some of the most rain of any city in the U.S.) and you have Kona (very touristy) with north of that being desert reminiscient of Nevada.
There are so many really cool areas of the Big Island, but you'll need to rent a car to really see them all. I think depending on your interests, would depend on which area of Big Island you might want to stay. |

We are looking for a relaxing time. Good scenery, hiking, beaches etc. We will be renting a car for maybe 3-4 days. We will be there for 7 nights. |

The beaches on the Big Island are not so quick and easy to get to.
Kona is a big tourist attraction area, but I don't know why. It doesn't have a beach beach, it's more like a boardwalk with some swimming and a lot of boats. There are some really nice beaches to the north and south of Kona, but you'd need to learn the bus schedule or rent a car to get to them easily.
There is Green Sand Beach which is VERY difficult to get to, but a REALLY cool looking beach. You have to drive for about 90 minutes from either Kona or Hilo, and then park and walk for about an hour. Actually has green sand.
Over by Hilo, there is one nudist hippy beach. It can be popular, and swimming with whales and such. It's a black sand beach and about 30 minutes by car south of Hilo.
I went to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Generally the Big Island is probably the worst for beaches - they exist, but not as popular there as the other islands. The Big Island has a lot of very different stuff to explore though, so still very interesting.
I actually loved Oahu the most for the beaches - North Shore, Waikiki, etc. Sure they are famous, but very beautiful beaches and famous for very good reasons. |

I lived in HI for 3 years. Don't go to the big island for the beaches. Check the national park for updates on the lava flows. It's worth the trip if you get to go up close and personal with it... but the flow changes every couple weeks. |

It's a good resource. Membership is like $10 I think, but you can save a TON on condo rentals.
Good luck... |

I've only been to Oahu but I enjoyed it. It seemed to have everything within driving distance. Big city, nice beaches, night life, etc. |

Oahu is too crowded for my tastes, esp. since I live in a big city. Big Island = many, many ecosystems, uncrowded, but low on beaches. Maui = the most beaches of all the islands, a mix of nature vs. populated areas, hike in the day, club at night. Also from Maui you can ferry over to Molokai or Lanai. Molokai is better unless you are an avid golfer. Kauai = small, but has the oldest ecosystem, it has native birds (no mongoose there yet) and great for hiking. |
